Introduction
It is well known that the food we take undergoes a series of
complex reactions within the body which constitute digestion
metabolism. These reactions are catalysed by enzyme which
are very specific in their actions and can function properly
only when pH of the medium is within a specific range.
Some enzymes require mildly alkaline conditions while others
operate only in a weak acidic conditions. Amongst the latter
category of enzymes, some control the digestion of proteins
which are present in the food as it reaches the stomach.
However, sometimes the stomach begins to secrete an excess
of HCl which causes the condition known as Gastric
Hyperacidity and is caused by overeating the highly spicy
food. This interferes in the normal process of digestion and
leads to acute discomfort due to indigestion.
An essential requirement of antacid is that it must not supply
an access of alkali which makes the medium alkaline, thus
making the enzymes ineffective. This is achieved in the
commercial antacid by incorporating other constituents that
keep the pH within the range. These drugs counteract the
excess acid present in the stomach.
Therefore it is advised to take an antacid at frequent
intervals. Commonly used antacids are Eno.
OBJECTIVE

AMOUNT OF SODIUM BICARBONATE

PRESENT IN DIFFERENT ANTACIDS
Requirements
 Burette
 Pipettes
 Titration Flask
 Beaker
 Weight Box
 Fractional Weight
 Sodium Hydroxide
 Hydrochloric Acid
 Methyl Orange
 Phenolphthalein
PROCEDURE
 Prepare 1L of approximately N/10
HCl solution by diluting 10ml of the
concentrated acid for 1L.
 Similarly, make 1L of approximately
N/10 NaOH solution by dissolving 4.0g
of NaOH to prepare 1L of solution.
 Prepare N/10 Na2CO3 solution by
weighing exactly 1.325g of anhydrous
Sodium Carbonate and then dissolving it
in water to prepare exactly 0.25L of the
solution.
 Standardize the HCl solution by
titrating against standard sodium
carbonate solution using methyl
orange as
indicator.
 Similarly, standardize the NaOH
solution by titrating it against
standardized HCl solution using
Phenolphthalein as
indicator.
 Powder the various samples of
antacid tablet and weight 1g of each.
 Add a specific volume of standardize
HCl to each of the weighed sample and
take it into a conical flask. The acid
should be in slight excess so that it can
neutralize
all the alkaline components of
the tablet.
 Add 2 drops of Phenolphthalein and
warm the flask till most of the
powder dissolves. Filter all the
insoluble
material.
 Titrate the solution against
standardize NaOH solution till a
permanent pinkish tinge is obtained.
 Repeat this experiment with
different antacids.
Standardization of Sodium Hydroxide Solution:
S. Initial Final Volume
No. reading of Reading of of acid
Burette(ml) Burette(ml) used
1. 0 9.5 9.5
2. 9.5 19 9.5
3. 19 28.5 9.5

Concordant Reading= 9.5ml

Applying Normality equation:
N1*V1=N2*V2
N1= Acid Strength
N2= Acid Volume
N3= Base Strength
N4= Base Volume
Therefore,
0.4115*9.5=N2*20
N2= 0.1954 N
Hence, the normality of NaOH is 0.1954 N
Observation and Calculation
Standardization of HCl Solution:
S. Initial Final Volume
No.
reading of Reading of of acid
Burette(ml) Burette(ml) used
1. 0 5.1 5.1
2. 5.1 9.7 4.6
3. 9.7 14.6 4.9
Concordant Reading = 4.866ml
Applying Normality equation:
N1*V1 = N2*V2
N1 = Acid Strength
N2 = Acid Volume
N3 = Base Strength
V2 = Base Volume
Therefore,
N1*4.86 = 20*(1/10)
N2 = 0.4115N
Hence, the normality of NaOH is 0.4115N
ANALYSIS OF ANTACID TABLET

Weight of antacid powder = 1 gram

Volume of HCl solution added = 40 gram

ANTACID Vol. of NaOH Vol. of HCl

soln. used for used for
neutralization neutralizing
(ml) 1 g of
antacid

ENO 93.5 40
DIOVOL 80 40
RIFLUX 74 40
CONCLUSION
The antacid for which maximum volume of
HCl is used for neutralizing is more
effective.
Observation in the before experiment
reveals that the most effective among the
commonly used antacids that have been
used in the
project is RIFLUX.
