THEME: GEOMETRY AND MEASURES

TOPIC: CIRCLE PROPERTIES – Lesson 2

KAZIBA STEPHEN
2nd January 2025
Activity: Exploring the Angle at the Centre Theorem
Materials Needed:
● A piece of plain paper or box cardboard, or a
used cake board(Remove the polythene).
● A cup or any object with a circular base for
tracing the circle.
● A cutter, razor blade, knife or sharp object to
cut the paper (use carefully to avoid injury)
● Mathematical set
● A pencil or pen
Instructions
● Trace and Cut:
○ Use a pair of compass to draw a circle of any radius on the paper or cardboard.
○ Optionally, cut out the circle for easier handling.
● Mark the Centre:
○ Mark the centre of the circle as O.
● Draw the Central Lines:
○ From O, draw a straight line to meet the circumference, and label the point on the circle as A.
○ From O, draw another straight line to meet a different point on the circumference, and label it B.
○ Ensure that A and B lie on the same arc.
● Measure the Central Angle:
○ Use a protractor to measure the angle ∠AOB (the central angle formed by the lines OA and OB).
● Draw the Inscribed Angle:
○ From point A, draw a straight line to meet any other point on the circumference. Label this meeting point as C.
○ From point B, draw another straight line to meet the same point C.
● Measure the Inscribed Angle:
○ Use a protractor to measure the angle ∠ACB (the inscribed angle formed at the circumference by the lines AC and
BC).
Observation

● Compare the measurements of ∠AOB (central angle) and

∠ACB (inscribed angle).
● What relationship exists between the two angles
