Prelims Booster 2024 English (Day-25)

1. Questions

Read the following passage and answer the following questions. Some words are highlighted in
bold to help you answer some of the questions.

For much of last month, the Indian public has observed with interest the criminal proceedings that
followed the arrest of Aryan Khan, son of filmstar Shah Rukh Khan. When the Bombay High Court finally
granted bail to Aryan, millions of Indians learnt that grant of bail by a court does not
automatically entitle the accused to an immediate release, unless the bail order is deposited in a physical
letterbox installed outside the Arthur Road prison. The box is opened four times a day and Khan’s lawyers
missed the last deadline because of which his son had to spend an extra night in jail. People were
astonished to learn that a “bail box” can stand between jail and the freedom of an Indian citizen.

om
Post this episode, Justice D Y Chandrachud, who heads the e-Committee of the Supreme Court,
commented at a public event that the delay in communicating bail orders has to be addressed on a war

l.c
footing. In September, his fellow judges on the bench had taken suo moto cognisance of the issue of non-
release of prisoners after grant of bail and directed the creation of FASTER (Fast and Secured

ai
Transmission of Electronic Records) System, which would transmit e-authenticated copies of the interim
orders, stay orders, bail orders and record of proceedings to the duty holders. The court was entirely silent

gm
on the fact that the Phase II document for the e-courts project, published in 2014, had announced
an ambitious but unfulfilled plan to allow for the transmission of information between key institutions in
@
the criminal justice system.
03

The “bail-jail” connectivity issue in the Aryan Khan case is but a symptom of a much deeper problem with
the structure, management and accountability of the e-Committee, which is responsible for steering the e-
courts project. A budget of Rs 935 crore and Rs 1,670 crore was approved by the government for Phase I
20

and II of the project, respectively, and the e-Committee, headed by a Supreme Court judge, decides how
to spend it. Yet, there is relatively little to show for all this money.

All I, II and III

I has been given in the last lines of the first paragraph.

II has been given in the first few lines of the second paragraph.

III is distorted and hence incorrect.

rt

5. Questions
so

Answer: D

All options are positive except d.

sh

Torpid means lazy.

ya

Pushy and aspiring are synonyms of ambitious.

Compulsion means necessity.

6. Questions

Answer: C

This is clear from the main idea of the passage that every problem related to judiciary delays mentioned in

7. Questions

Prelims Scoring Part Bundle Course 2024
Prelims Booster 2024 English (Day-25)

Answer: B

It is a specific question of which the answer is mentioned in the second last line of the passage.

8. Questions

Answer: C

The part C of the sentence is wrong. The mentioned phrase “which has been leading to the” …. is
grammatically wrong (in present continuous tense). The right phrase should be in simple past tense like
“which led to the” to make the sentence grammatically correct.

The correct sentence would therefore be-

om
There was no ideological break as exemplified by the ascendance of Margaret Thatcher in the United
Kingdom and Ronald Reagan in the United States (US), which led to the spread of market
fundamentalism globally in the 1980s.

l.c
Option C is the correct answer

ai
9. Questions

Answer: D
gm
The part D of the sentence is erroneous. The mentioned phrase “so much as” is grammatically wrong. The
correct phrase “as much economic damage” makes the sentence grammatically correct.
@
The correct sentence would therefore be-
03

In the middle of the most devastating pandemic India has seen in a century, it can be hard to think of the
20

other challenges that lie ahead of us because there is arguably no country in the world that has seen as
much economic damage from the pandemic as India.
ha

Option D is the correct answer

10. Questions
rt

Answer: A
so

The part A of the sentence is erroneous. The mentioned phrase “people will be tending towards” is
sh

grammatically wrong as it is in the “present continuous tense” while the rest of the sentence is in simple
present tense. So, the correct phrase should be “people are less productive” to match it grammatically with
ya

the rest of the sentence.

The correct sentence would therefore be-

Since during hot spells, people are less productive at work and more likely to be absent it is not
surprising that the factories produced about two per cent less revenue for every degree rise in the annual
temperature.

Option A is correct the answer

11. Questions

Answer: D

The part D of the sentence is erroneous. The mention of the phrase “them over at a par” is wrong. The

Prelims Scoring Part Bundle Course 2024
Prelims Booster 2024 English (Day-25)

right phrase is “them at par” to make the sentence grammatically and meaningfully correct.

The correct sentence would therefore be-

With lockdown measures and social distancing firmly in place, bike retailers suddenly became an “essential
service” and were given exemptions from shutting down by governments, putting them at par with
grocery stores in most countries across the globe.

Option D is correct the answer

12. Questions

Answer: B

om
The part B of the sentence is erroneous. The mention of “white-collar employers” is wrong. Employers are
owners of the company; hence the right word should be employees. The correct phrase should be “white-
collar employees” to make the sentence meaningful.

l.c
The correct sentence would therefore be-

ai
After almost a year and a half of working from home, many white-collar employees say they are not
willing to return to corporate offices full-time so employers are dangling remote-work arrangements as the
latest enticement for new recruits.

Therefore, option B is the correct answer

@
13. Questions
03

Answer: D
20

The passage is talking about the new ATM rules that have been announced. The rules (regulations)
imposed have been done with a good intention as they acknowledge (recognize) the role of cash in our
ha

economy.

Looking at the meaning and the usage, option (d) is the correct answer.
rt

Mandate and Dictum can be ruled out as they are singular and also little authoritative and extreme as per
so

the required context.

Construe means to interpret well which cannot be used to regulations so this can eliminate option (a) as
sh

well. Option (e) becomes useless with the word confess.

ya

14. Questions

Answer: B

The paragraph starts with saying that the new regulations are well-intentioned and then it says that the
penalty has not been well thought of. So, this indicates a contradiction. The best word that initiates a
contradiction from the given options is option (b) i.e. however. Nevertheless is also similar but can be
eliminated as the second word is in the third form which will be grammatically incorrect.

So, option (b) is the correct answer.

15. Questions

Answer: A

PDF Course Subscription | Mock Tests Subscription | All in One Subscription Page 9 Of 10
Prelims Scoring Part Bundle Course 2024
Prelims Booster 2024 English (Day-25)

The sentence is trying to explain that though the reason these regulations are being imposed are no doubt
good but, only imposing a penalty won’t solve the cash unavailability issue at the ATMs.

The best word that fits the first blank is intent. As in, the intention behind the rules is good. Thought could
be a good second choice but intent is better. So, other than options (a) and (c) all will be ruled out.

The issue is not disruption, rather disruption due to cash crunch (outage) or exhaustion so; option (a) is the
best choice.

16. Questions

Answer: D

The line is talking about the steps that need to be taken.

om
So, the correct way in which it goes will be;

What needs to be done… Hence, option (d) is the best choice.

l.c
Deployment is generally done in the forces not in terms of cash and augur means to predict or foresee

ai
something which is also not the correct usage for the second blank.

17. Questions

Answer: C gm
@
The line talks about cash forecasting which should be correct so, the best word for the second blank should
be either spot on or accurate. The other options can be eliminated.
03

Logically, the implementation of rules makes sense and not the discharge. So, the obvious answer is option
20

(c).

18. Questions
ha

Answer: E
rt

The sentence tells us that there is a need that the sincere implementation of the rules made by the
government is necessary and carrying cash abiding by the norms will solve the problem.
so

Above meaning can be evinced with the use of the words in option (e).
sh

Stringent rules means the rules that are not lenient or flexible. Although, Rigid and Uncompromising also
mean the same but these two words do not fit in the context.
