OSI and Protocols worksheet

Protocols
Protocols are the standard terms that computers use to understand each other. Two computers must
have one or more protocols common in order to exchange the data. Before 1980, developing these
protocols was the responsibility of hardware manufactures. This led to compatibility issues between
devices from different companies. To sort out this issue, open standard protocols were developed.

1. Investigate and describe the following protocols.

a) Internet Protocol (IP)
b) Transmission control Protocol (TCP)
c) User Datagram Protocol (UDP)
d) File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
e) Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
f) WiFi (802.11)
g) Bluetooth
h) Long Term Evolution (LTE)
OSI layer model
The OSI model describes networking in terms of seven layers.

The upper layers of the OSI model represent services like encryption and connection management.
These layers are software based.

The lower layers of the OSI model implement functions such as routing, addressing and flow control.
These layers are hardware-oriented

All data that goes over a network connection passes through each of the seven layers.

The OSI model was introduced in 1984. It was designed as a model and teaching tool, the OSI model
remains a useful tool for learning about today's network technologies such as Ethernet and protocols
like IP.

The OSI is maintained as a standard by the International Standards Organization.

1. Match the layer to the description.

Session Provides the means of

transferring data from one
node to another.
Data Link Defines the electrical and
physical specifications of the
data connection.
Presentation The OSI layer closest to the

Network Controls the dialogues
(connections) between
computers.
Application Provides node-to-node data
transfer—a link between two
directly connected nodes.
Transport Provides the means of
transferring data from a source
to a destination host.
Physical Establishes context between
application-layer entities.
2. Write the following layers into the correct place in the diagram.
