Chilled Water System - Open Circuit
Chilled Water System - Open Circuit
Water control devices installed on the water pipes are important and integrated into the BMS.
Chiller above has 3 circuits, 2 water circuits, and 1 refrigerant circuit. All these 3 circuits meet at the
chiller to exchange heat.
1st Circuit: Chilled water system , water goes through the evaporator, and there is a pump to push
the water to the AHU/FCU.
2nd Circuit: Condensing water system, water goes through the condenser to cool down the
refrigerant vapor to condensate it into liquid. Due to the heat exchange between the water and the
freon, water temperature raises, and the pump will push this hot water to the cooling tower to cool
it down.
3rd Circuit: Refrigerant circuit consists of compressor, condenser, evaporator, & expansion valve
(Orifice). Refrigerant change its state from gas to liquid in condenser, and from liquid to gas in the
evaporator. Cooling produced in the evaporator from turning freon into gas and cooling the water,
the cold water travelled into the FCU/AHU through the pumps.
What are the control devices that are installed into the water pipes which we controlled
by BMS or other control system ?
Cooling Tower Open Water Circuit : What are in the Condensing water pipes.
Why water entering to the cooling tower from bottom to up not opposite ? Because if the
water coming from up , the water might be pushing air through the pipes which will reduce
heat exchange as air will act as obstacle. The water does come from the bottom, so its
intensity higher comparing to the air and if any air it will push it all the way to the Air Vent
which will takes it out from the water pipe.
Air Vent : Takes air out of the condensing water pipe.
Check valve : Installed after the condensing water pump , its purpose to make
sure no water coming back to the pump when system is off and upon starting
again. When system is off, water will stay still in the pipe and it will pressure to
go back to the pump.
Gate Valve : Manual valve you can open or shut.
Butterfly Valve : Control valve which receives signals from the BMS to open or
shut. It has electrical and mechanical part. And it is also received feedback to the
BMS wheather there is water passing or not. If no water then signals will request chiller
to turn off as this is the first defence line in the chiller.
Flow Switch : Very important device ; to know water flow quanitiy, if this amount of
water goes less
then the requried it will goes off and shut down of chiller is required.
Pressure Transmitter : in the inlet and outlet. To know the pressure of the water.
Chilled Water System Pipes
Air Vent : to be isntalled in any outlet of water.
Check Valve : to make sure water goes into one direction and load on pump upon starting.
Butterfly valve : to give signals and received feedback to the BMS.
T.S : inlet and outlet.
Flow switch
P.T. : inlet and outlet
