Student Learning Activities at Home
Task 1: Using Selection Tools

 Open a new blank canvas in GIMP.

 Use the Rectangle Select and Ellipse Select tools to create a simple abstract pattern with various rectangles and circles (or
ovals).
 Challenge: Use the Shift key to add to the selection and the Ctrl key to subtract from the selection to combine shapes.
 Experiment with using the Free Select tool to outline and select irregular shapes.
 After creating the shapes, fill each selected area with different colours using the Bucket Fill or Paintbrush tool. Make sure to
choose contrasting colors for each shape to highlight the selections.

Task 2: Using Paint Tools

 Open a new or existing image in GIMP (this could be a free image from the internet or a simple photo of a landscape,
animal, etc.).
 Select an area of the image using the Fuzzy Select tool (which selects based on colour) or Scissors Select tool (which traces
around the edges).
 After selecting an area, use the Paintbrush or Airbrush tool to paint or add texture to the selected portion of the image.
 Experiment with different brush sizes and opacity levels to create different effects on the image.
 Try using the Bucket Fill tool to change the background or other larger areas of the image.
