Synopsis:
In the central part of Luzon, there are two young and innocent ladies. They always create memories with
each other, eat together when they're craving something, and they even share the smallest details
about themselves. In short, they're just doing what normal sisters do. But things went different when
they heard the latest controversial issue revolving around their country. Friend #1, which is Alexa Lyn,
defends the controversial issue of Alice Guo and her relatives, and Friend #2, which is Maica, opposes
the opinion of her best friend.
SCENE #1 (FRIENDLY DATE OF TWO LADIES AT THE RESTAURANT)
Friend #1: Hey, sistah! How's your day?
Friend #2: Well, just like yesterday, I'm still not feeling good.
Friend #1: Oh! Sorry to hear that, Maica. May I know what happened?
Friend #2: Just look at my tweets in X (formerly twitter)
Friend #1: Ohh I see. So....you....are... against to Alice Guo?!?!
Friend #2:Obviously, I am! I still don't have the freedom to voice my opinions after she assumed a false
identity and mistreated the helpless individuals in her POGO hub!?
Friend #1: Chill, Maica, just chill. Well, in some parts you are right, but, you don't need to be that violent
to express your opinion. Let's just watch the latest senate hearing.
Narrator: We have seen the two communication barriers in that scene: the people and the opinions and
beliefs. We cannot deny that despite our strongest bonds with family, friends, and other people, there
are still things that separate us. Similar to how Alexa Lyn and Maica spoke, Alexa Lyn encouraged Maica
to calm down because she thought Alice Guo and her family hadn't done anything wrong. But because
of a contentious situation on social media, Maica can't help but argue and make disparaging remarks.
SCENE #2 (NEWS REPORTER BEFORE THE SENATE HEARING)
*/Network lagging
Narrator: We saw certain communication hurdles in that scene, which is a communicative situation. The
reporter's network or internet connection was slow when he spoke, which caused the material to be
presented erratically.
SCENE #3 (SENATE HEARING OF SENATOR RISA HONTIVEROS AND ALICE GUO)
Sen.Risa: Saang home school provider naka-connect ‘yung teacher ninyo?
Sen. Risa: Still out of more than curiosity, saan po kayo nagtapos ng elementary?
Alice Guo: Homeschool po ako, your honor.
Alice Guo: Your honor, dire-diretso po.
(Fast forward to intense part)
Sen. Risa: ahh, hindi po ‘yung negosyo. Mula po nung 1986 when you were born, your recollection, 86 to
the time you obtained your birth certificate in 2005.
Sen. Risa: No, I'm not asking the day you were born. Because obviously nobody knows that. I said 1986
to 2005, between the day you were born and nine years old, you would have the recollection.
Sen. Risa: Paulit-ulit naman, parang memoryado niyo ohh. Kase cino-coach ka ng lawyer mo siguro. Ahh
just you know, magkuwento ka.
SCENE #4 (CONVERSATION OF TWO LADIES)
Friend #2 Did you see? It's pretty obvious that Alice Guo was faking her real identity.
Friend #1: No, she's not! How many times I would tell you that she's innocent.
Friend #2: Ohh, she's innocent? Okay! Bye! Eat together with that chinese entity (Alice Guo).
Friend #1: What? Who's that chinese entity? */confused
*/Friend #2 walk out
Narrator: We can clearly observe the communication barrier in that scene—Maica's statements have a
concealed motive. Briefly, the topic. Alexa Lyn became perplexed when Maica used the term "Chinese
entity" since she wasn't sure what Maica was attempting to convey.
SCENE #4 (CLASSROOM- BASED DEBATE)
Narrator: The weather is good but the two ladies aren't. Because they're having a debate about the
controversial issue they have talked about and the root of their anger toward each other. Meanwhile,
the teacher presented a short video where they saw the clip of Representative Dan Fernandez and
Cassandra Li Ong, also known as Cassandra Guo. Cassandra Guo faced inquiries regarding various issues,
including her involvement in the escape of the Guo family.
Rep. Dan: Cassandra...Cassy, kumusta ka na? Can you kindly remove your facemask? Maganda ka naman
e, relax ka lang, Cassandra. You remember the time that you texted me diba? And eventually, you call
me?
Cassandra Guo: Yes po.
Rep. Dan: Yes, during our conversation sinabi mo kung ano ‘yung dapat mong gawin. Is it correct,
Cassandra?
Cassandra Guo: Yes po.
Rep. Dan: And sa text mo sa akin hano, I know that this came from your heart. Sinabi mo dito sa text na
“Hi Con, thank you for the time to pick up the call.” Cassy. Cassy, listen. Please don't whisper to her.
Pabayaan natin siyang mag-isip ng sarili niya. Malaki na si Cassy. She know what she wants to answer.
And we will be helping you, remember. Just cooperate, be truthful, be honest. You are a Filipina.
nag-uumpukang mga bato, then you tell us. Samahan mo kami. Puwede nating pag-usapan ‘yung tayo
lang, you want?
Cassandra Guo: Puwede pong pag-isipan?
Rep. Dan: Sige, sige. But we will be warning you. The Filipino citizen are watching now, and you're
answer to them are not acceptable. Maraming namatay, maraming nawalan ng trabaho, you can still
save yourself. By answering our questions.
Narrator: After watching the short clip, the two ladies proceeded in front of their classmates and started
talking about their viewpoints regarding the issue they had watched. Alexa started the debate as she
talked about her support for the Guo family. And not just that, Alexa is fluent in speaking Korean
because she is a half-Korean and Filipino citizen. She took advantage of her multilingual skills to present
her stand and started making negative comments about Maica in Korean. However, Maica didn't like her
approach. That's why she presented concrete evidence to counter Alexa's viewpoints.
Friend #1: What's wrong with you, girl?
Friend #2: You should ask yourself first, what's wrong with you? You're defending those people who
abused the innocent people in POGO Hub. Also, you are protecting them without even researching their
backgrounds. They even violated the laws, the rules and regulations in our country. Yet, you're still
supporting them. How pathetic you are!
Friend #1: yeogiseo hansimhan geon balo dangsin-ieyo. dangsin-eun sosiopaeseujeog-in naleusisiseuteu-
ija wiseonjaibnida. neo jasin-eul bwala, jeongmal bukkeuleoun il-ida.
Friend #2: You're being irrelevant that's why you are using your other language. Well, you can't beat me.
No matter how hard you try, I'm still on the top. And no one change that.
Narrator: The fire is getting bigger between the two ladies. In that scene, we saw one of the
communication barriers — the language choice. As the conversation gets deeper, Alexa threw some
hurtful words about Maica. Also, she used her multilingual skills to ridicule Maica.
SCENE #5 (SILENT ARGUMENT DURING THEIR CLASS )
Narrator: They're still not done after their debate. They dispute about their next topic incessantly.
However, this time, they are expressing their positions through nonverbal cues. As a member of the
group that oversees tutoring for children with disabilities, Maica has an edge. She is therefore speaking
to them nonverbally. But before they started, they also watched the latest and trending news between
Shiela Guo and the two senators—Senator Joel Villanueva and Senator Bato Dela Rosa.
Sen. Bato: Shiela?
Shiela Guo: Po?
Sen.
Sen. Bato: Pasensya?!
Shiela Guo: Kapag may mali ako na sinasabi kasi...
Sen. Bato: You are lying!
Sen. Bato: Oo! Tell it to marines. Huwag mo kaming lokohin dito! I-i will not move for your content. I-i
will not move for you, for you to be sided to your content. Naglabas lang ako ng hinanakit ko, dahil
parang niloloko mo kami dito sa komite!
Shiela Guo: Hindi po, hindi po.
Sen. Bato: I'm not asking for your answer, I'm just stating the facts, hah! ‘Yun lang! Baka akala niyo kaya
niyong lokohin!
Shiela Guo: Ahh hindi po.
Sen. Bato: Makinig ka!
Shiela Guo: Opo.
Sen.
Sen. Bato: Kami dito hindi kami puwedeng bayaran ah.
Shiela Guo: Hindi po, hindi po.
Sen. Bato: Walang puwedeng magbayad kahit na, milyon milyon ‘yun pera niyong mga Chinese kayo,
walang makabayad samin dito, kaya ‘wag mo kaming lokohin!
Sen. Joel: Shiela, hindi mo man lang alam. Eto Shiela ‘yung tanong ko. Kase diba aalis ka na nung gabi
diba? Aalis ka na? Marami kang dalang gamit, tatagal kang walang gamit. So ang plano mo doon ka na
lang bibili. Mag-shopping ka kung saan.
Shiela Guo: Wala, hindi ko alam.
Sen. Joel: So, wala kang dalang gamit?
Shiela Guo: Wala.
Sen. Joel: Okay, sige.
Shiela Guo: Opo, opo.
Sen. Joel: Kahit impyerno sasamahan mo siya?
Shiela Guo: Opo, opo.
Sen.
pupunta, ate?” “Saan tayo, magpapakamatay na ba tayong lahat?” “Sabay-sabay ba tayo? Anong
gagawin natin.”
Friend #2: */rolled her eyes and pointed her fingers in her head, trying to imitate the devil thorns.
Friend #1: rolled her eyes back.
Narrator: After watching that, they made some sign language. Maica started the argument, she rolled
her eyes and pointed her fingers in her head, trying to imitate the devil thorns. In this part, we saw one
of the communication barriers using non-verbal communication — the language of gestures.
Scene #6 (REALIZATION OF TWO LADIES)
Narrator: During their break time, the two young ladies decided to talk each other. They also apologize
for their immoral behavior and inhumane character they've shown to other people.
Friend #2: Sorry, I'm really sorry.
Friend #1: I'm sorry, too. Sorry for being so childish when it comes to societal issues. I'll promise that
we'll never experience this again.
Friend #2: Sorry, too. If only I respect your opinion, we would never end up like this. If only I'm an open-
minded person, things won't go like this.
Friend #1: Stop crying, we both accepted our mistakes. We both apologized for our unjustified actions. I
love you, my friend.
Narrator: After the roller-coaster emotions, the two young ladies resolved their conflict. It's evident that
communication is the key to solving any situations. Just like what the two young ladies did, they still
thought about their friendship over their different opinions and beliefs. They also apologized for their
darkest sides.
REFLECTION:
In our daily lives, we can always encounter communication barriers. As we grew up, we must
understand that everything will not just rely on our story; we should also respect people's different
perspectives in this life. Conflicting personalities or communication preferences may result in
misunderstandings, just like what happened to the two young ladies. In order to overcome these
barriers, we must foster open-mindedness and respect for diverse perspectives to encourage
constructive dialogue. We should also promote inclusivity and validate the different opinions and
beliefs. So that we could continue interacting effectively and efficiently.
