Definition Of Health, mental health and Mental illness.

Definition Of Health

• The World Health Organization defines health as a state of complete physical,

mental, and social wellness, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

• This definition emphasizes health as a positive state of well-being. People in a state

of emotional, physical, and social well-being fulfill life responsibilities, function

effectively in daily life, and are satisfied with their interpersonal relationships and

themselves
Definition of mental health

• It does not mean the absence of mental illness.

• It is the ability to adjust to new situations and to handle personal problems without

marked distress and still have enough energy to be a constructive member of

society.
Psychiatric nursing

• Psychiatric nursing or mental health nursing is the specialty of nursing that


cares for people of all ages with mental illness or mental distress.
Characteristics of healthy individual
• 1-An appropriate perception of reality.

• 2-The ability to accept one’ self and others.

• 3-The ability to focusing concentration on problem solving.

• 4-A desire for privacy.

• 5-Independence, autonomy, and intensity of emotional reaction.

• 6-The ability to achieve satisfactory interpersonal relationships

• 7-creativeness
8-Ability to play and laugh.
9-Ability to work and be productive
10-Capacity to deal with conflicting emotions.
11-Ability to live without fear, guilt, or anxiety.
12-Ability to control one’s own behavior.
13-Use good judgment, reach insightful conclusions.
14-Experience empathy toward others.
Influences that can have an impact on an individual’s mental health

• 1-Biological variable &Hormonal influence.

• 2-Psychological variable (parents and sibling child-interactions ;intelligence; self-

concept; skills, &emotional development level)

• 3-Sociocultural (family stability, economic level, housing, supportive system, inadequate

health resources& religious influences & values)


Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
• 1-Physiological needs (food- water- air- sleep- elimination-sexual)
• 2-Safty & security.
• 3-Love &belonging
• 4-Self esteem &esteem of others.
• 5-Self actualization.
Mental illness

• We say that person is mentally ill when behavior deviates sufficiently from

the normal so as to indicate disorganization of the self.

• The mind expressing its discomfort through thoughts, feelings, and

behaviors .
General criteria for mental disorder

• 1-Dissatisfaction with one’s characteristics, abilities and accomplishments.

• 2-Ineffective or unsatisfying interpersonal relationships.

• 3-Dissatisfaction with one’s place in the world.

• 4-Ineffective coping or adaptation to the events as a lake of personal growth.


Mental illness theory describing the causation of mental illness

1-Psycoanalytical theory

• *It believe that disrupted behavior in the adult back to earlier developmental
stages.

• * If the child has been frustrated he become fixated on particular stage.


2-interpersonal theory

• If a child is given only disapproving messages about the self system develops

(good me- bad me- not me) it leading to anxiety because it includes a threat

to rejection by others it leads to mental illness.


3-Social theory

• Social conditions are largely responsible for deviant behavior ( poverty, family

problems, inadequate education) can predispose person to mental illness.


Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental disorders
• The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition

(DSM-5):

 is a taxonomy published by the American Psychiatric Association and

revised as needed.

The current edition made some major revisions and was released in 2013.
The DSM-5 describes all mental disorders, outlining specific diagnostic

criteria for each based on clinical experience and research.

All mental health clinicians who diagnose psychiatric disorders use this

diagnostic taxonomy.
•The DSM-5 has three purposes:

1. To provide a standardized nomenclature and language for all mental health

professionals.

2. To present defining characteristics or symptoms that differentiate specific diagnoses.

3. To assist in identifying the underlying causes of disorders


• The classification system allows the practitioner to identify all the factors that relate to a

person’s condition are:

 All major psychiatric disorders such as depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, and

substance-related disorders.

Medical conditions that are potentially relevant to understanding or managing the

person’s mental disorder as well as medical conditions that might contribute to

understanding the person


 Psychosocial and environmental problems that may affect the diagnosis,

treatment, and prognosis of mental disorders.

 the primary support group, the social environment, education,

occupation, housing, economics, access to health care, and the legal

system.
