Hana Farnese, Kaitlyn Jones, Megan Horsmon

Hana Farnese, Kaitlyn Jones, and Megan Horsmon chose to research Title IX: Reforming Women's Rights for their National History Day project. They were interested in sports and wanted a topic they could easily research. They conducted research at the library and online, dividing the work evenly. They decided to create an interactive website to present their project digitally. Their topic of Title IX reforming women's rights fits this year's NHD theme of revolution, reaction, and reform in history by showing how women's role in society changed through reform but also generated positive and negative reactions.

Hana Farnese, Kaitlyn Jones, Megan Horsmon Title IX: Reforming Women s Rights Senior Division

How we chose our topic? The first day we went to the library with our teacher, Ms. Sanner, we formed our group of three girls who all shared a common interest in sports. Hana plays field hockey, Kaitlyn plays soccer and Megan plays softball. We wanted to do something that interested us and would be easy to do research on. We ve heard of the topic before and it fit our interests well, so we began to research it. How we conducted our research? Our class visited the library often as we were gathering our research. Our librarians and teacher aided us in finding reliable websites and online databases. We divided the work evenly between the three of us. The way we researched was that we would type in search terms like Title IX , women s rights , women in sports , opinions of Title IX , events around 1972 , and who lead the reform of Title IX . After we found a source that seemed appropriate for our topic and contributed to our knowledge about our topic, we would site it in Noodletools. The main tool we used in our research was a computer and the internet. How we selected our presentation category and created our project? We chose to do something original and interactive like a website. Usually, we would do an exhibit. Our train of thought was inspired by the ease of doing a website. In the 21st century, most work is done on the computer. We all know our way around a computer and the internet. When creating our project, first we signed up for Weebly through the NHD website. We then started looking for things that would make our website pop, like a banner we found about Title IX. After we made the site looking appealing, we made separate tabs for the different categories of our project. Next, we put all of our information on the separate divisions of our topics on the different tabs. Finally, we will put the process paper and annotated bibliography on the website and publish it.

How our project relates to the NHD theme? This year s NHD theme is Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History . This year s theme is about how your topic has evolved history. Our topic is Title IX: Reforming Women s Rights. This relates to revolution and reform because the way women were treated changed. First, women did not have a strong role in society, but today women can vote, get an education, get scholarships, have a good job, play sports, sports only men could play, and do anything a man can do. Our project relates to reaction because it had positive and negative reactions to the amendment. Some people did not agree with the new rights women had, but some people did support women s new role in society. Our topic is a good example of Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History .
