Sentence structure
 Subject
Definition: The subject of a sentence is the person, place,
thing, or idea that does the action or is being described. It
usually answers the question "who" or "what" is doing
something.
Position: The subject typically appears at the beginning of
the sentence.
 Object
Definition: The object of a sentence is the person, place,
thing, or idea that receives the action of the verb. It usually
answers the question "who" or "what" is affected by the
action.
Position: The object typically follows the verb in a
sentence.

 Examples in Context
1.Simple Sentence:
o "The dog (subject) chased the ball (direct object)."

Basic Sentence Structure


The most common structure for a simple sentence is:
Subject + Verb + Object (SVO)

Breakdown of Parts of Speech


1.Noun
o Position: Usually serves as the subject (beginning)
or object (after the verb).
o Example: "The dog (subject) chased the ball
(object)."
o Why: Nouns identify the main actors or things in
the sentence.

2.Pronoun
o Position: Can replace a noun in the subject or
object position.
o Example: "He (subject) chased the ball (object)."
o Why: Pronouns avoid repetition

3.Verb
o Position: Follows the subject and expresses the
action or state of being.
o Example: "The dog chased the ball."
o Why: Verbs are the action or linking words that
connect the subject to what it does.

4.Adjective – (ASVO)/(SVAO)/(ASVAO)
A: adjective
S: Subject
V: Verb
O: Object
o Position: Usually comes before a noun (or after a
linking verb).
o Example: "The big dog chased the red ball."
o Why: Adjectives provide details about nouns

5.Adverb (SAdvAO)
S: Subject
Adv: adverb
A: Action
O:Object
o Position: Can modify verbs; often placed before or
after the verb.
o Example: "The dog often chased the ball."
o Why: Adverbs give more information about how,
when, where, or to how often something happens.

6.Preposition/The place (SAOPrep)


Prep: preposition
o Position: usually is found before a noun or
pronoun that means a place for example street,
park, mall, room.
o Example: "The dog chased the ball in the park."
o Why: Prepositions shows relationships between
nouns (or pronouns) and other words, providing
context.

The car is parked in the garage outside.

7.Connecting words ( Sentence + connecting word


+ sentence)
o Position: Connects words, phrases;
o Example: "The dog chased the ball, and he
caught it."
o I bought apples, oranges, bananas and kiwis.
o I like coffee but I don’t drink it everyday.
o Why: Connecting words create more difficult and
meaningful sentences.

Example Sentences
1.Simple Sentence:
o "The happy dog quickly chased the ball in the
park."

 Subject: "dog" (noun)

 Verb: "chased"
 Object: "ball"

 Adjective: "happy" (describes the noun)

 Adverb: "quickly" (modifies the verb)

 Prepositional Phrase: "in the park" (adds


location)

2.Compound Sentence:
o "The dog chased the ball, and the cat jumped on
the fence."

 Two independent sentences connected by the


conjunction "and."

3.Complex Sentence:
o "The dog chased the ball because it was bored."

 Independent sentence: "The dog chased the


ball"
 Dependent sentence: "because it was bored"
(provides reason).

Exercise 1: Identify the Subject and Object


Read the following sentences and identify the subject and
the object (if there is one).
1.The cat chased the mouse.
2.Maria baked a cake for her friend.
3.The teacher gave the students a test.
4.The dog barked loudly.
5.He wrote a letter to his grandmother.

Exercise 2: Build Simple Sentences


Create simple sentences using the following subjects and
objects. Make sure to include a verb.
1.Subject: The cat; Object: the toy
2.Subject: My brother; Object: a bicycle
3.Subject: The teacher; Object: a lesson
4.Subject: The children; Object: a game
5.Subject: The dog; Object: a bone
