Lab Tasks
1. Bar Magnet
Q1.1 Describe how does the compass interact with the bar magnet.
The compass needle moves and points along the magnetic field. Its north end points toward the magnets south pole and its
south end points toward the magnets north pole.
Q1.2 If we say the magnetic field lines are pointing from North to South outside of the magnet, what
happen to it when it’s inside the magnet?
Outside the magnet they go from north to south but inside the magnet the field lines loop back from south to north its like a
complete circle.
2. Pickup Coil
Verification of Electromagnetic Induction Experiment 11
Q2.1 When you move the magnet towards the coil (as diagram), describe what happens inside the coil.
A current is created in the coil and the lamp connected to it might light up.
Q2.3 When you move the coil towards the magnet, describe what happens inside the coil.
Its the same thing as above a current is created and the lamp lights up.
Q2.4 When you move the magnet away from the coil, describe what happens inside the coil.
A current is still create but it flows in the opposite direction compared to when the magnet was moving closer.
Q2.6 Change the bar magnet strength to 20%. Suggest any new observation for the lamp when you move
the magnet.
The lamp will be dimmer because a weaker magnet produces less electricity.
Verification of Electromagnetic Induction Experiment 11
3. Electromagnet
Q3.1 Suggest two ways of how you can make the induced magnetic field strength weaker.
You can:
1. Use less electric current
Q3.2 What happens when you reverse the direction of the battery?
The direction of the magnetic field reverses. Its like flipping the north an south poles.
Q3.3 What happens when you change the current source to AC?
The magnetic field doesn't stay steady it flips back and forth as the current changes direction.
Conclusion:
Verification of Electromagnetic Induction Experiment 11
This experiment is all about how magnets and electricity interact. You've seen that moving a magnet near a coil can create
electricity, and how the strength and speed of movement make a big difference. It's also cool to see how reversing the
current or using AC changes the magnetic effects!
