Exercise #1

The beam OAB represented on the figure, which is in equilibrium in the direct
orthonormal Galilean reference frame ( g ) = (O x, y, z ) , is constituted by a cylinder
of revolution of axis (O x ) , diameter d , length 2l , quadratic moment I and
Young modulus E .

The beam is clamped in O and subjected in A to the vector torsor:

A = −F y 0 .

with F  0 . We give OA = lx and OB = 2lx . We neglect the action of gravity.

1) Determine and plot the shear force and bending moment diagrams in each
segment OA and AB .

2) Determine the equations of the deformation in terms of F , l , x , E and I .

3) Calculate the deflection in x = l and x = 2l .

4) Determine the value of the maximum bending stress.

Correction of exercise #1

1) Torsor of internal force

For 0  x  l , we have the torsor of internal forces which is given by

K  =  → 2 + L → 2 =  , with MO  = (l − x ) x  ( −Fy ) = −F (l − x ) z ,
thus:

T1 = − F and M f1 = − F ( l − x ) .

For l  x  2l , the torsor of internal forces is zero K  = 0 and we have:

T2 = 0 and M f 2 = 0 .

The corresponding diagrams are shown below.

2) Deformation

d 2 v1 M f1 F dv F  x2 
For 0  x  l , we have = =− ( l − x ) , 1 = −  lx − + C1 
dx 2 EI EI dx EI  2 
F  lx 2 x3 
and v1 = −  − + C1x + D1  .
EI  2 6 

d 2 v2 M f2 dv2
For l  x  2l , we have = =0, = C2 and v2 = C2 x + D2 .
2 EI dx

The four integration constants are determined from the four conditions:

dv1 dv dv
( 0 ) = 0 , v1 ( 0 ) = 0 , 1 ( l ) = 2 ( l ) and v1 ( l ) = v2 ( l ) .
dx dx dx

We obtain the algebraic system:

F  l2  F  l3 
C1 = 0 , D1 = 0 , −  + C1  = C2 , −  + C1l + D1  = C2l + D2 ,
EI  2  EI  3 

Therefore, we have:

Fl 2 Fl 3
C2 = − and D2 = .
2 EI 6 EI

Finally, we obtain:

dv1 Fx ( 2l − x ) dv2 Fl 2 Fx 2 ( 3l − x ) Fl 2 ( 3x − l )
=− , =− , v1 = − , v2 = − .
dx 2 EI dx 2 EI 6EI 6EI

3) Deflection in x = l and x = 2l

The deflections in x = l and x = 2l have the value:

Fl 3 5Fl 3
v1 ( l ) = v2 ( l ) = − and v2 ( 2l ) = − .
3EI 6EI

The deformation of the beam is shown below:
