SECTION -A (1 mark ques ons )

1. If the net electric flux through a closed surface is zero, then we can infer

separated from each other, and the rod P is removed. What will be the nature of charges on
spheres A and B ?
9. A metal sphere is kept on an insula ng stand. A nega vely charged rod is brought near it, then the
sphere is earthed as shown. On removing the earthing, and taking the nega vely charged rod away,
what will be the nature of charge on the sphere ? Give reason for your answer.

10. Two iden cal conduc ng balls A and B have charges –Q and +3Q respec vely. They are brought in contact with each other
and then separated by a distance d apart. Find the nature of the Coulomb force between them.

11. Why is the electrosta c poten al inside a charged conduc ng shell constant throughout the volume of the conductor ?

SECTION-B (2 mark ques ons)

12. The space between the plates of a parallel plate capacitor is completely filled in two ways. In the first case, it is filled with a
slab of dielectric constant K. In the second case, it is filled with two slabs of equal thickness and dielectric constants K1 and K2
respec vely as shown in the figure. The capacitance of the capacitor is same in the two cases. Obtain the rela onship between
K, K1 and K2 .

13. A capacitor of capacitance 1 F is charged by connec ng a ba ery of negligible internal resistance and emf 10 V across it.
Calculate the amount of charge supplied by the ba ery in charging the capacitor fully.

14. Two point charges q 1 = + 1 C and q 2 = + 4 C are placed 2 m apart in air. At what distance from q1 along the line joining
the two charges, will the net electric field be zero ?

15. Find the total charge stored in the network of capacitors connected between A and B as shown in figure :

16.In the circuit shown in the figure, the charge on the capacitor of 4 F is 16 C. Calculate the energy stored in the capacitor
of 12 F capacitance.
17. The figure shows a network of five capacitors connected to a 100 V supply. Calculate the total energy stored in the network.

18. Two large parallel plane sheets have uniform charge densi es +  and  . Determine the electric field (i) between the
sheets, and (ii) outside the sheets.

19. Two iden cal capacitors of 12 pF each are connected in series across a 50 V ba ery. Calculate the electrosta c energy
stored in the combina on. If these were connected in parallel across the same ba ery, find out the value of the energy stored
in this combina on.

20. A uniform electric field E of 500 N/C is directed along +x axis. O, B and A are three points in the field having x and y
coordinates (in cm ) (0, 0), (4, 0) and (0, 3) respec vely. Calculate the poten al difference between the points (i) O and A, and
(ii) O and B.

21.Three point charges 1 𝜇C, -1𝜇C and 2𝜇C are kept at the ver ces A, B and C respec vely of an equilateral triangle of side 1 m.
A1 , B1 and C1 are the midpoints of the sides AB, BC and CA respec vely. Calculate the net amount of work done in displacing
the charge from A to A1 , from B to B1 and from C to C1 .

22. Find the equivalent capacitance between points A and B, if capacitance of each capacitor is C.

22. Two iden cal electric dipoles are placed along the diagonals of a square ABCD of side 2 m as shown in the figure. Obtain
the magnitude and direc on of the net electric field at the centre (O) of the square.
SECTION-C (3 mark ques ons)

23.Two small iden cal electric dipoles AB and CD, each of dipole moment p are kept at an angle of 120 to each other in an
external electric field E poin ng along the x-axis as shown in the figure. Find the

(a) dipole moment of the arrangement, and

(b) magnitude and direc on of the net torque ac ng on it.

24. In the figure given below, find the (a) equivalent capacitance of the network between points A and B. Given : C1 = C5 = 8
F, C2 = C3 = C4 = 4 F. (b) maximum charge supplied by the ba ery, and (c) total energy stored in the network.

25. A hollow conduc ng sphere of inner radius r1 and outer radius r2 has a charge Q on its surface. A point charge –q is also
placed at the centre of the sphere. (a) What is the surface charge density on the (i) inner and (ii) outer surface of the sphere ?
(b) Use Gauss’ law of electrosta cs to obtain the expression for the electric field at a point lying outside the sphere.

26.(a) An infinitely long thin straight wire has a uniform linear charge density . Obtain the expression for the electric field (E)
at a point lying at a distance x from the wire, using Gauss’ law.

(b) Show graphically the varia on of this electric field E as a func on of distance x from the wire.

27. (a) Two point charges q1 and q2 are kept at a distance of r12 in air. Deduce the expression for the electrosta c poten al
energy of this system.

(b) If an external electric field (E) is applied on the system, write the expression for the total energy of this system.

28. Two large charged plane sheets of charge densi es  and –2 C/𝑚 are arranged ver cally with a separa on of d
between them. Deduce expressions for the electric field at points

(i) to the le of the first sheet,

(ii) to the right of the second sheet, and

(iii) between the two sheets.


SECTION-D (5 mark ques ons)

29. (a) Find the expression for the poten al energy of a system of two point charges q1 and q2 located at 𝑟 and 𝑟 , respec vely
in an external electric field  E .

(b) Draw equipoten al surfaces due to an isolated point charge (– q) and depict the electric field lines.

(c) Three point charges + 1 C, – 1 C and + 2 C are ini ally infinite distance apart. Calculate the work done in assembling
these charges at the ver ces of an equilateral triangle of side 10 cm.

30. An electric field is uniform and acts along + x direc on in the region of posi ve x. It is also uniform with the same
magnitude but acts in – x direc on in the region of nega ve x. The value of the field is E = 200 N/C for x > 0 and E = – 200 N/C
for x < 0. A right circular cylinder of length 20 cm and radius 5 cm has its centre at the origin and its axis along the x-axis so that
one flat face is at x = + 10 cm and the other is at x = – 10 cm. Find :

(i) The net outward flux through the cylinder.

(ii) The net charge present inside the cylinder.

31. (a) Use Gauss’s law to show that due to a uniformly charged spherical shell of radius R, the electric field at any point
situated outside the shell at a distance r from its centre is equal to the electric field at the same point, when the en re charge
on the shell were concentrated at its centre. Also plot the graph showing the varia on of electric field with r, for r  R and r  R.

(b) Two point charges of + 1 C and + 4 C are kept 30 cm apart. How far from the + 1 C charge on the line joining the two
charges, will the net electric field be zero ?

32. (a) Two point charges q1 and q2 are kept r distance apart in a uniform external electric field E . Find the amount of work
done in assembling this system of charges.

(b) A cube of side 20 cm is kept in a region as shown in the figure. An electric field E exists in the
region such that the poten al at a point is given by V = 10x + 5, where V is in volt and x is in m. Find
the (i) electric field  E , and

(ii) total electric flux through the cube.

33. (a)A parallel plate capacitor of capacitance ‘C’ is charged to ‘V’ volt by a ba ery. A er some me the ba ery is
disconnected and the distance between the plates is doubled. Now a slab of dielectric constant 1 < k < 2 is introduced to fill the
space between the plates. How will the following be affected ?

(i) The electric field between the plates of the capacitor.

(ii) The energy stored in the capacitor. Jus fy your answer in each case.

(b) The electric poten al as a func on of distance ‘x’ is shown in the figure. Draw a graph of the electric field E as a func on of
x.
(c) Is the electrosta c poten al necessarily zero at a point where the electric field is zero ? Give an example to support your
answer.

34.(a) A charge Q is distributed over the surfaces of two concentric hollow spheres of radii r and R (R >> r), such that their
surface charge densi es are equal. Derive the expression for the poten al at the common centre.

(b)Three concentric metallic shells A, B and C of radii a, b and c (a < b < c) have surface charge densi es + , –  and + 
respec vely as shown. (a) Obtain the expressions for the poten al of three shells A, B and C. (b) If shells A and C are at the
same poten al, obtain the rela on between a, b and c.

35. A parallel plate capacitor is an arrangement of two iden cal metal plates kept parallel, a small distance apart. The
capacitance of a capacitor depends on the size and separa on of the two plates and also on the dielectric constant of the
medium between the plates. Like resistors, capacitors can also be arranged in series or parallel or a combina on of both. By
virtue of electric field between the plates, charged capacitors store energy.

(a) The capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor increases from 10 𝜇F to 80𝜇F on introducing a dielectric medium between the
plates. Find the dielectric constant of the medium.

(b) n capacitors, each of capacitance C, are connected in series. Find the equivalent capacitance of the combina on.

(c) A capacitor is charged to a poten al (V) by connec ng it to a ba ery. A er some me, the ba ery is disconnected and a
dielectric is introduced between the plates. How will the poten al difference between the plates, and the energy stored in it be
affected? Jus fy your answer.
