MECA 321 – Mechanics of Materials

Instructor: Mehmet Ayyıldız

Project: Static Failure Analysis of a Robotic Arm

Introduction: In this project, students will work in groups of three to design a new robotic arm.
They will perform analyses to ensure mechanical stability of the robotic arm using the
knowledge obtained in mechanics of materials course.

Objective: The students must propose an industrial robotic arm which is able to lift 100 kg load
located 2 meters away from the base. The students are free to use existing robot designs or make
their own designs from scratch. The minimum factor of safety for all of the components in the
robot must be at least 2. The students should perform the necessary analyses and apply
appropriate failure criteria at each component in the structure to show that there will be no static
failure. Finally, they must iterate mechanical designs to minimize the weight of the robot.

• Design with SolidWorks (30%):

• 3D Design (15%)
• Animations (15%)
• Structural Analysis for Static Failure (70%): Develop models of mechanical components
by making reasonable assumptions and writing appropriate equations and then solving
them:
• First, the students should create 3D solid design of the robotic arm in SolidWorks
software using initial dimensions and profiles (cross-sections). Note: please use
industrial standard profiles such as I-beams, S-beams and also use standard bolts, nuts,
studs and bearings.
• Make assumptions
• Simplify the geometry
• Concept selection: cross section for beam; thin walled cylinders, plates
• Material selection: elastic modulus, yield strength, weight, cost
• Analysis & calculations:
o Free Body Diagrams
o Shear & moment diagrams
o Displacement/deflection analysis
o Determine required section modulus
o Beam selection
• Concept design
o Analysis: check for axial, torsional, bending, shear, buckling
o Determine critical loads/deflections for failures
o Iterate structural analysis if the conditions are not satisfied (update material type
or change dimensions to ensure the stability of the structure under various
operating conditions).
o Cost analysis
• Static structural analysis in SolidWorks (optional)

Monitoring: Students will present their progress in the project during the lab sessions. They
are encouraged to take advantage of lab sessions to receive help to fix their specific project
issues.

Evaluation: There will be a relative ranking between project groups and each group will
receive grades accordingly.

Deadline: The deadline for the project is the last lecture of this course. Also, project
presentations will take place at the last lecture.
