COMPUTER NETWORK

No. of questions to be set: Total 5 questions will be given from Unit –I & Unit II.
No. of questions to be answered: All questions to be answered.

Objective: This course emphasizes on several computer network concepts, applications and
protocols in OSI as well as TCP/IP layered architecture. It also covers the various protocols
of various layers, their operations and applications.

Pre-requisites: Communication Technique and Data Communication.

Course Outcomes (CO):


CO1 Students will able to understand the concept of data communication protocols and
standards.

CO2 Students will able to understand the complexity of networks, their structure and
utility.

CO3 Students will able to understand the concept of open Systems and Application
Support Protocols.

UNIT- I

Introduction [5 hrs.]
Introduction of Computer Network: Definition, Data Communication System Model,
Network Categories; Network Topologies; Network Reference Models: ISO-OSI Model, and
TCP/IP Model; Physical layer: Transmission Modes, Transmission Media, Transmission
Impairments; Switching Techniques;

Data Link Layer [5 hrs.]


Data Link Layer Design Issues; Error Detection and Correction; Elementary Data Link
Protocol: Simplex, Stop-and-Wait ARQ, Sliding Window ARQ Protocol: One Bit Sliding
Window ARQ, Go-back-N ARQ, Selective Repeat ARQ;

Medium Access Control Sub Layer [3 hrs.]


Multiple Access Control (MAC) Protocol: ALOHA, Slotted ALOHA, CSMA Protocols;

Network Layer [7 hrs.]


Introduction: Network Layer Design Issue; Addressing: IP Address, Classless and Class full
Addressing; Routing: Definition, Static vs, Dynamic Routing, Routing Table; Routing
Algorithm: Introduction, Optimality Principle, Shortest Path, Flooding, Distance Vector
Routing, Link State Routing; General Principle of Congestion Control: Leaky Bucket
Algorithm, Token Bucket Algorithm;

UNIT-II

Sub Netting and Super Netting: [3 Hrs.]


Need of Sub Network, Hierarchical Addressing Scheme, Role of Gateway, Subnet Mask in
Packet Transmission. Concepts of Super Netting and Slack Route;
Network Layer in the Internet [5 hrs.]

Internet Protocol: IPv4 protocol and IPv6 protocol, IPv4 Addressing; ARP, RARP, DHCP
and mobile IP; Internet Routing Protocols: RIP, OSPF, BGP, and ICPS;

Transport layer [6 hrs.]


The Transport Services: Services Provided to Upper Layer, Transport Service Primitives;
Element of transport protocols; Congestion Control; TCP: Introduction, TCP Service Model,
TCP Protocol, TCP Segment Header, TCP Connection Establishment, TCP Connection
Release, TCP Connection Management, Transmission Policy, Congestion Control; UDP-
Introduction, RPC, RTTP.

Application layer [6 hrs.]


DNS; Email- SMTP, POP3; World Wide Web (WWW): HTTP; Mobile Web; FTP,
TELNET, P2P Network.
