Assignment – 02 ( Column, Built up column, Lacing and Batterns &

Connections)
Submission date already over and is extended to 20-01-2020.

1. What is meant by braced, unbraced columns & frames?


2. What is the effective length of columns as per wood’s method in IS800?
3. Design the built up column of length 10m to carry an axial load of 1600kN using
Battens.
4. Design laced columns which are subjected to an axial force of 2000 kN for the
following Configurations.
a. 2 Channel Sections Back to Back
b. 4 Angle Sections in all the four corners.
5. Built up sections
a. Calculate Ixx , Iyy & λ of 2 Angle sections (ISA 100mm x 100mm x 10mm) when
placed in a such fashion to get a box shape, Length of the column is 6m.

b. Calculate Ixx , Iyy & λ of 2 Channel sections of ISMC 150 when placed front to
front with a 20mm thick plate in between, and the length of the column is 6m.

c. Calculate Ixx , Iyy & λ of 2 Channel sections of ISMC 150 when placed back to
back with a distance of 300 mm and open space is covered with 20m thick plate
for the full length and the length of the column is 6m.

d. Calculate Ixx , Iyy & λ of an I – Section (ISHB 450) with cover plates (500mm x
20mm in one flange and 300mm x 20mm on the other flange). The length of the
column is 8m.

e. Calculate Ixx , Iyy & λ of 2 I – Section (ISMB 600) placed @ a distance of 500mm
c/c with cover plates (650mm x 20mm) covering both top and bottom flanges.
The length of the member is 8m.
