Is TikTok going away?
The popular social media app could be banned in the United
States. Here’s why.
TikTok is growing fast in the United States, but there’s something
you should know. While you watch videos, TikTok collects
5 information about you. It might even know what you look like.
Most social media apps gather this kind of data, but unlike others,
TikTok isn’t owned by an American company. It’s owned by
ByteDance, a company in China. Many people say TikTok is a threat to privacy and safety. So, in April,
U.S. lawmakers passed a law: if Tik Tok isn’t sold, the app will face a ban in the United States.
10 What does this all mean for the future of TikTok?
Today more than 170 million people use TikTok. Just by creating an account, users give up some of
their online privacy. TikTok gathers information about you. In fact, TikTok is probably tracking you –
even if you don’t use social media. So are Google, Meta and other big tech companies.
Why do tech companies care about how many videos you watch?
15 For one thing, knowing your interests is helpful. It’s how TikTok suggests videos for you. However,
there is another reason tech companies spy: other companies pay them for your user data. Then, they
use that data to target you with ads.
Life without TikTok
Will TikTok really go away? No one knows for sure. But the idea of life without TikTok angers the
20 app’s fans. It probably won’t disappear right away. Over time, the app will just stop working. Then, we’ll
have to find our videos somewhere else.

Year 9 – Listening Test 1

A.
It's one of the biggest apps in the world, but is using TikTok a security risk? TikTok is owned by the Chinese tech
company ByteDance. Many people are afraid the app can collect your data and possibly hand it to the Chinese
government. For people with sensitive information on their phones, for example government workers, this is a
major security risk. Currently there is a lot of tension between China and the West and governments are banning
workers from having the app on their work phones. The U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee has voted to give
the American president the power to ban the app completely. TikTok was also banned in India in 2020. However,
the UK hasn’t implemented these restrictions yet, but some MPs are worried about this app. TikTok denies any
security risk. The European Commission has banned the app, but it seems that it hasn’t had much of an impact
on users. 125 million people in the European Union have the app, while in the United States it's used by two-
thirds of all teenagers. All this is happening while tensions between China and the West, particularly America, are
constantly increasing. This TikTok controversy is all part of that picture; it seems that issues with this app won’t
be solved for quite some time.

B./C.
Susan:
I check my phone a lot more than I can count. I always check it when I wake up in the morning, before school, on
the bus to school, a couple of times in each class, at lunch, after school, walking home, while I’m doing
homework… I'm constantly checking my phone until I go to bed.
If my parents saw some of the things that I see on social media, I’m sure they would be very shocked. I frequently
see racist comments in comment sections. There's a lot of online bullying and it’s horrible. People will make a
rude comment using offensive language. They make it very personal and upsetting. They just want to undermine
your feelings.
Once I broke my phone and I didn't have it for a week and everyone thought something serious had happened to
me because it was impossible to contact me.

Peter:
I never feel depressed or anything like that because there's always somebody to talk to. That's kind of a good
thing about social media. You can talk to people, but you can't really get your emotions across and connect to
people. I sometimes wish I could just hang out with my friends, play basketball or do other things.
I like photography and so sometimes I'll use social media as a platform to display my art. I really enjoy talking
about things I'm very passionate about and discussing issues with people who like the same things I do. That's
what makes social media so cool.
I don't really wish for the days when I didn't have my phone because it just gives me so much stuff that I cherish.
The thing I love most about social media is to stay connected with my friends over the holidays.

Mary:
I have been emotionally affected by social media, maybe even depressed, but it's hard to say which causes what.
Sometimes when I'm sad I like to chat with my friends on social media and that really makes me feel less lonely.
After getting my phone, in-person interactions have been replaced by text and FaceTime.
When I get on my phone, there’s always something new. It's exciting and constantly sharing new things online
definitely contributes to the amount of time people spend on social media.

Suggested answer:
I think there should be laws to control big tech companies because they can collect our personal information.
I believe it is important to protect online users because they know a lot about our online activity.
In my opinion people need to be careful about sharing information online. It is common to share photos or
comment on someone’s posts on social media. Many people think TikTok is a threat, but I disagree with laws that
can ban social media apps completely.
In conclusion, more laws should be created to control tech companies and protect online users.
