Unit 3: CHOICES 10
In this lesson, you will be learning more about stress and how it aids in effective communication.
You convey meaning through speech not only by the words you say but also by the way
you say them. For example, how loudly or softly you pronounce the syllables in a word can
determine what the word means that is why stress in English should be learned. It helps you to
communicate well and is significant to human’s life. It can signal the meaning you want a
particular word to convey. It also determines more than the meaning of an entire sentence. This
makes sense to human because every day we communicate.

Week 1
Things to Remember
Stress is the relative emphasis that may be given to certain syllables in a word, or to certain
words in a phrase or sentence. In English, stressed syllables are louder than non-stressed
syllables. Also, they are longer and have a higher pitch.
English is a stress-timed language. That means that stressed syllables appear at a roughly
steady tempo, whereas non-stressed syllables are shortened.

SENTENCE STRESS
Sentences are characterized by series of stressed and unstressed syllables. It is wrong to believe that
speaking English correctly means pronouncing each word distinctly. Some words in a sentence need not
to be stressed or emphasized.
Normally, the stress falls on the content words like nouns, adjectives, adverbs, verb and in
demonstratives and interrogatives. These content words carry the thought of the sentence so they are
said louder, longer and with a higher pitch.
Example:
Father gave me a new pen.
The underlined words are stressed whereas me and a are said quickly, lightly and softly. Function
words like pronouns, articles, prepositions, conjunctions and auxiliary verbs are not stressed in the
sentence.
