PROCEDURE:

CONNECTION PROCEDURE OF MAWDSLEY MACHINE AS INDUCTION

MOTOR:
1. From the student manual of MAWDSLEY machine, make the connections of the stator windings in
delta fashion and then shot the rotor terminals to make the machine work as a induction motor.
2. Use these three terminals of the delta connected stator winding as the three terminals to connect to
supply.

NO LOAD TEST:
1. Make the connections as per the circuit diagram.
2. Apply rated voltage of 240V to the MAWDSLEY machine working as induction motor through
the three-phase VARIAC.
3. Note down the readings, power, input voltage, input current, power factor, speed.

BLOCKED ROTOR TEST:

1. Make the connections as per the circuit diagram.
2. By adjusting the three-phase VARIAC allow rated current through the machine with rotor blocked.
3. Note down the readings, power, input voltage, input current, power factor.
REDUCED VOLTAGE TEST:
1. Make the connections as per the circuit diagram of no load test.
2. Apply rated voltage to the machine by using three-phase VARIAC.
3. Now gradually reduce the voltage in steps of 20V until 10% of slip.
4. Note down the readings, power, input voltage, input current, speed, power factor at every step.

RETARDATION TEST:
1. Make the connections as per the circuit diagram of no load test.
2. Run the machine under no load condition by applying rated voltage through VARIAC, and note
down the readings of no load voltage and no load speed of the machine.
3. Switch off the supply, note down the time for the speed of the machine to drop to zero.

LOAD TEST:
1. Make the connections as per the circuit diagram of load test.
2. Apply rated voltage to the machine using three-phase VARIAC.
3. Now excite the field of the DC machine and vary it to give rated voltage at its armature terminals.
4. Now the DC machine running as a DC generator is loaded gradually in steps until the input
current, of the MAWDSLEY machine working as a Induction motor, reaches its rated value.

LOAD TEST:

NO LOAD TEST:
BLOCKED ROTOR TEST:

CONCLUSIONS:

1. We obtained the machine's magnetizing parameters from a no load test conducted at the rated voltage.
2. We determined the Mawdsley machine's resistance and inductance with the aid of the blocked rotor
test.
3. We also obtained the inertia constant value with the aid of the retardation test.

PRECAUTIONS:

1. Connections should be tight, loose connections should be avoided.

2. Care must be taken while loading the machine, i.e., current should not exceed the rated value of
either of the machines.
3. Machine should be given voltage through a VARIAC slowly to avoid high starting torques.
4. DC machine should be excited only after the test machine reaches its no load conditions.
5. DC machine should be taken to its rated condition before loading the machine through external
loading rheostat.
