OBJECTIVE: Study on Mawdsley generalized machine for the three-phase induction motor
mode.
(a) Conduct (i) no load test, (ii) blocked rotor test, and (iii) stator winding resistance test on a three-phase
induction motor and compute its equivalent circuit parameters.
(b) Conduct load test and draw the following characteristics: (i) Speed vs. Output Power, (ii) Current vs.
Output Power, (iii) Power factor vs. Output Power, (iv) Efficiency vs. Output Power.
(c) Compute the following characteristics: (i) Speed vs. Output Power, (ii) Current vs. Output Power, (iii)
Power factor vs. Output Power, (iv) Efficiency vs. Output Power using same parameters as in part 1(a).
APPARATUS REQUIRED:
Note: Any other test needed to compute the efficiency or to fulfill the objective

PROCEDURE:
NO LOAD TEST:
1. Make the connections as per the circuit diagram.
2. Apply rated voltage of 240V to the MAWDSLEY machine working as induction motor through
the three-phase VARIAC.
3. Note down the readings, power, input voltage, input current, power factor, speed.
RETARDATION TEST:
1. Make the connections as per the circuit diagram of no load test.
2. Run the machine under no load condition by applying rated voltage through VARIAC, and note
down the readings of no load voltage and no load speed of the machine.
3. Switch off the supply, note down the time for the speed of the machine to drop to zero.
LOAD TEST:
1. Make the connections as per the circuit diagram of load test.
2. Apply rated voltage to the machine using three-phase VARIAC.
3. Now excite the field of the DC machine and vary it to give rated voltage at its armature terminals.
4. Now the DC machine running as a DC generator is loaded gradually in steps until the input
current, of the MAWDSLEY machine working as a Induction motor, reaches its rated value.
NO LOAD TEST:
1. No load test without DC excitation-:

CONCLUSIONS:
1. We obtained the machine's magnetizing parameters from a no load test conducted at the rated voltage.
2. We determined the Mawdsley machine's resistance and inductance with the aid of the blocked rotor
test.
3. We also obtained the inertia constant value with the aid of the retardation test.
