Students will conduct guided field-based assignments
throughout the semester on an environmental issue. They will
also learn to apply various environmental tools in understanding
these challenges.
Suggested Practical/ activities:
• Basic exercises to Calculate and Assess solid waste generation/ water
consumption for a specific duration at individual/ family/ college/ locality
level.
• Conducting waste audits/ studying waste composition
• Visit to a material recovery facility
• Organize a seminar/ conference/ workshop/ panel discussion on relevant
topics for enhancing awareness, capacity building, and critical reasoning
among students.
• Discussion and solution of case studies; related videos and
demonstrations, cooperative learning, problem-solving
• Visit a local polluted site – urban / rural / industrial / agricultural
• Visit a lake rejuvenation site in Delhi
• Record and analysis of climate trends by taking meteorological data.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the students will be able to:
● Demonstrate knowledge of fundamental processes that impact the environment (module 1
and 2)
● Identify contemporary environmental problems and their drivers including anthropogenic
activities. (module 1, 2 and 4)
● Understand the suitable air, extent of noise pollution, and control measures and acts.
(module 1)
● Understand the water and soil pollution, and control measures and acts (module 1)
Pedagogical approach
The core Module Syllabus for Environment Studies includes classroom teaching and Field
Work. The syllabus for Sem 3 is divided into fourmodules covering 45 lectures. The first three
units cover classroom-based teaching and practical understanding of relevant topics to enhance
knowledge skills and attitudes to the environment. Unit four is based on field activities which
will provide studentswith first-hand knowledge ofvarious local environmental aspects. Field
experience is one of the most effective learning tools for environmental concerns. This moves
out of the scope of the textbook mode of teaching into the realm of real learning in the field,
where the teacher merely acts as a catalyst to interpret what the student observes or discovers
in his/her own environment. Field studies are as essential as class work and form an
irreplaceable synergistic tool in the entire learning process.
