Function and Limit
F is defined for,
4 − x2 − y2 ≥ 0
⇒ x2 + y2 ≤ 4
∴ Domain = x, y : x 2 + y 2 ≤ 4
Again, for all the points on the circle x 2 + y 2 = 4, f x, y = 0 and the maximum value at the centre
4 = 2. Therefore, for every value of the domain the functional value will stay within 0,2 .
∴ Range = 0,2
Solution: Let, z = 4 − 4x − 2y ⇒ 4x + 2y + z = 4
A triangular portion of the plane can be sketched by plotting the intersections with the co-ordinate axes and
joining them with the line segments.

𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: i Given, f x, y =
x3 − y3
Now,
x3 + y3 x3
lim lim f(x, y) = lim lim = lim = lim 1 = 1
x→0 y→0 x→0 y→0 x 3 − y 3 x→0 x 3 x→0
And,

lim lim f(x, y) = lim lim 3 = lim 3 = lim −1 = −1
y→0 x→0 y→0 x→0 x − y 3 y→0 −y x→0
Therefore, iterated limits of the function does not exist at the point 0,0 .

Solution:
xy
i Given, f x, y =
x2 + y2
Now,
xy
lim lim f(x, y) = lim lim = lim 0 = 0
x→0 y→0 x→0 y→0 x 2 + y 2 x→0
And,
xy
lim lim f(x, y) = lim = lim 0 = 0
y→0 x→0 y→0 x 2 + y 2 x→0
Therefore, iterated limits of the function does not exist at the point 0,0 .
Therefore, simultaneous limit of the function does not exist at the point 0,0 .
