On-Campus Traditional Course Structure:


 On-Campus class sessions twice per week with independent online assignments.
 Attendance is required for on-campus sessions.
 Arrange for instructional support or meeting time with the instructor.
Closings and Delays: Call 203-285-2049 or sign up for Alerts.
Instructor Absences: check postings on campus video monitors and in college email.

General Course Description/Learning Expectations:


In this three-credit course, students will:
 Enhance and refine skills in exposition, interpretation, and argumentation.
 Use in-depth critical reading strategies to improve comprehension of college level texts.
 Apply critical reading, thinking, analyzing, writing, and principles of revision to all assignments.
 Student writing will focus on understanding, reporting on, reacting to, analyzing and
evaluating the ideas of others.
 Apply College Standards of American English and MLA style to essays/research papers.
 This course does not satisfy an English requirement or an elective in any degree program,
 nor do the credits count toward graduation
Required Course Materials:
 NO materials to purchase-must have access to a computer/laptop to access assignments

Student Expectations:
 You must have access to a computer or laptop to complete assignments.
 Plan to use the library or computer labs if you do not have personal computer access.
 Complete the course with a minimum passing grade average of 73% (C)
 ***Use Blackboard to access and Submit assignments on time to receive credit.
 Maintain your own electronic copies of all required writings.
 Comply with all GCC classroom, online, and on-campus policies.
 Activate and use GCC email to access all college and professor communications.
Campus Security: Students must carry and show college IDs for entry to GCC and classes.

Attendance:.
 Students are expected to be on time and to remain for the entire class session.
 Students must sign in at the start of each class.
 Students will have to be in class to complete class entry startups and other in-class work.
 NOTE: Some start-up assignments are timed with auto shutdown.
 Email the instructor prior to the start of class if you will not be in attendance.

 Most assignments are accessed on Blackboard whether in class or not.
 NOTE: Some entry task assignments may not be posted on Blackboard.

Classroom and Online Conduct and Protocols (See GCC Handbook)


“The classroom is a small vital community devoted to teaching and
learning. Instructors run their classes for everyone’s benefit and have the
right to expect full cooperation from all students. Mutual respect and
appropriate behavior are essential elements in this academic setting”
(GCC Handbook ).
 The college policies for code of conduct applies to all school related campus and online
activities. Follow netiquette guidelines provided in the handbook and this syllabus.
 Conduct conducive to a positive and cohesive learning/teaching environment is expected
whether in class/or communicating online.
 Students are expected to refrain from engaging in any behavior or language restricted by GCC
Codes or as stated in this course policy whether on campus or online. (See GCC Handbook)
 NOTE: Per GCC Directive: NO food or beverages are allowed in GCC classrooms.

Assignment Due Dates:


 All Blackboard assignments have posted due dates regardless of class attendance.
 These assignments may become unavailable for completion and submission after due dates.
 If absent from class, access online self-instruction materials and assignments on Bb.

Submitting Work to Blackboard:


All writing must meet college academic standards for formal style including:
 Word choice, spelling and punctuation, sentence structure, and citation.
 MLA paper set-up, proper in-text citations and works cited for materials used.
Microsoft Word must be used for written assignments:
 Vocabulary, Questions, Outlines, Essays, Research Paper.

 Plagiarism includes using information without identifying sources, copying from another,
submitting writing that someone else has written, submitting a paper you have written for
 another course, or using AI ChatGPT or other online AI writing sources to create a paper.
 Plagiarism is a profound violation of academic trust and may result in, negative consequences.
 Assignments are checked for plagiarism through Blackboard with Safe Assign software.

FINAL GRADE AVERAGE


Minimum 73% average (C) required to enroll in English 1010.
72%-70%: auto-enrollment into ALP (combined English /support course)
Final Grade Calculation:
Part 1- 75%: All Writing Assignments, Assessments, Quizzes, Prompts
Part 2- 25%: Research Argument Paper

Keep up with due dates:


There is no additional make-up time at the end of the semester nor any extra credit assignments.
GCC Grading Scale
A= 94 and above A- = 90-93
B+ = 87-89 B = 83-86 B- = 80—82 . F = below 60
C+ = 77-79 C = 73-76 C- = 70-72 NP=Insufficient attendance/insufficient work
D+ =67-69 D = 63-66 D- = 60-62. (NP= Can adversely impact financial aid!)

 This is not a “self-paced” course; attendance to on-campus class sessions is required.
 I am prepared to attend class and log in to the Blackboard course weekly to complete assignments.
 I am responsible for viewing pre-set posted deadlines built into this Blackboard course and for submitting
assignments on time.
 If I do not already have the essential technical skills needed to create, open, download, save and upload
Word documents through Blackboard, then I am responsible for learning how to do so.
 I am expected to open, view, and/or listen to posted materials for self-instruction.
 I must log into this course on Blackboard to access lessons, practices/quizzes, and all required
assignments whether in attendance or absent from class.
 I must have regular access to a computer whether at home or at the college with high-speed Internet

ENGLISH 0930 COURSE LEARNING AND PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

CLASS STRUCTURE-TOPICS OUTLINE:


Students learn and practice the college-level skills for student performance outcomes through:
critical reading and writing activities, class discussions, lectures, group presentations, workshops.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Apply Academic Language Conventions:
punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, MLA essay style and citation.
2. Read With Accurate Comprehension:
 Analyze Texts: Identify the main idea and supporting points of various rhetorical modes.
 Apply Note-Taking Strategies:
o Deconstruct text to analyze central idea, main points, supporting details using outlining
and note-taking strategies.
3. Formulate Effective Writing Strategies:
 Paragraph and Essay Organization:
o Develop, organize, and refine ideas in thesis-driven essays relevant to the assignment.
 Summarize, Paraphrase, and Quote Text:
o Integrate summaries, paraphrases, and direct quotes into essays to achieve rhetorical purpose:
o To inform, entertain, explain, or persuade.
 Develop thesis-driven essays:
o Establish a clear, single focus to achieve specific rhetorical purposes in essays.
o Establish a clear argument supported with relevant, credible evidence.
4. Respond to Rhetorical Situations:
 Use analysis and evaluation of text to demonstrate ability to identify:
o Awareness of audience and purpose and accuracy
o Accuracy, validity, and relevance of information.
5. Develop a Critical Stance (Critical Position):
 Agree or disagree with main point or thesis claim.
 Base position argument on text evidence, other additional readings, and prior knowledge.
6. Craft Logical Arguments:
 Compose unified, coherent, well-developed paragraphs to support a thesis in an argument essay.
7. Produce Research-Based Argument:
 By the end of the semester students will apply the above semester learning outcomes:
o Write an appropriately structure, well developed thesis-driven, research-based argument
paper.
o The paper must contain 900 to 1200-word following MLA format and citation requirements
o Paper development will be beyond the 5-paragraph model.
