DIRECTIONS: Give the correct number in a sequence of numbers.

Study the table of numbers below.

1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21, 28, 36, 45 form a number sequence.


A number sequence is a list of numbers in which successive terms
follow a rule or pattern. Each number in a sequence is called a term.
Looking at the pattern of the shaded number
- To find the 2nd term add 2 1+2=3
- To find the 3rd term, add 3 3+3=6
- To find the 4th term, add 4 6 + 4 = 10
- To find the 5th term, add 5 10 + 5 = 15
- To find the 6th term, add 6 15 + 6 = 21
By studying the sequence of numbers, we can find the rule governing
the terms. The rule can tell us what number will come next in the sequence.

Here are some examples:

Find the next term of the number sequence.


1) 3, 7, 11, 15, ___ , __ _ answers: 19, 23
Rule of pattern: Add 4 to find the next term.

2.) 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, _____ answer: 128


Rule of pattern: Multiply 2 to find the next term.

3) 5, 10,17, 26, __, __ answer: 37, 50


Rule of pattern: Addition of consecutive odd numbers starting from 5.
5 + 5 = 10 26 + 11 = 37
10 + 7 = 17 37 + 13 = 50
17 + 9 = 26

4) 24, 21, 18, 15, ____ answer: 12

Rule of pattern: Subtract 3 to the next term.
