LEARNING ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

Week Covered: WEEK-1

Learning Competencies: Visualizes percent and its relationship to fractions, ratios,
and decimal numbers using models, defines percentage, rate or percent, and base and
identifies the base, percentage, and rate in a problem (M5NS-IIIa-136-138)

Objectives: After completing this learning activity sheet, you should be able to:

1. visualize percent and its relationship to fractions, and decimal numbers;

2. change percent to fractions, ratios, and decimal numbers and vice-versa; and
3. identify the base, percentage, and rate in a problem.

Visualizing Percent and Its Relation to Fractions and Decimals

The figure below represents the percentage of kids who watch television before
they go to sleep.

There are 100 parts in all in this figure.

➢ The shaded parts are 44 out of 100.

This means that 44% of the kids
watch television before they go to
sleep.

Study these:
The relation of percent to fraction
44
➢ 44% is equal to 100
44  4 11
➢ Simplifying =
100  4 25

To determine the relationship of fraction to decimal,

➢ divide the numerator by the denominator.
➢ or to change percent to decimal, move the decimal point 2 places to the left and
drop the % sign.
44% = 0.44

Here is another example. Study the shaded parts.

There are 25 shaded parts. It means

25
in fraction
100

0.25 in decimal

25% in percent

3
Remember:

➢ To change percent to fraction, change percent to fraction with a denominator of

100, and then simplify it.
25
25% =
100
➢ To change percent to decimal, drop the % symbol and move the decimal point 2
places to the left.
25% = 0.25
➢ To change decimal to percent, simply move the decimal point 2 places to the
right, then write the symbol % to the number.
0.25 = 25%

Changing from Percent to Fraction

To change from percent to fraction, change percent to fraction with a

denominator of 100, and then simplify it.

Example 1:

Percent Fraction Simplest Form

1. 23% 23 23
100 100

2. 50% 50 1
100 2
3. 150% 150 3
100 2
4. 300% 300 3
=3
100 1

Changing from Percent to Decimal

To change percent to decimal, drop the % symbol and move the decimal point 2
places to the left.

Example 2:

Percent Fraction Decimals

1. 23% 23 23 ÷ 100 = 0.23
100
2. 50% 50 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5
100

4
3. 150% 150 150 ÷ 100 = 1.5
100
4. 300% 300 300 ÷ 100 = 3
100

Changing from Decimal to Percent

To change decimal to percent, simply move the decimal point 2 places to the
right, then write the symbol % to the number.

Example 3:

Decimal x 100 Percent

1. 0.01 0.01 x 100 1%
2. 0.45 0.45 x 100 45%
3. 2.24 2.24 x 100 224%
4. 3.9 3.9 x 100 390%

Changing from Fraction to Percent

To change a fraction to percent, change it into decimal first by dividing the

numerator by the denominator. Then, move the decimal point two places to the
right and affix the % symbol.

Example 4:

Fraction Decimal Percent

23 23 ÷ 100 = 0.23 23%
1.
100
1 1 ÷ 2 = 0.5 50%
2.

3 3 ÷ 2 = 1.5 150%
3.

4. =3

Base, Percentage, and Rate

Percentage is a part of a whole. That whole or total is the base, while the number
with percent (%) symbol is the rate.

Take a look at the examples below.

Example 1

Jane will be celebrating her birthday next week. She is so excited to

do her shopping. In her list is a pair of shoes that she will wear for her
birthday party. What made her more excited was when she saw that her
dream pair of shoes is on sale. From ₱ 4,295.00, it is now sold to 20%
discount! How much will Jane save if she buys the shoes?

Analyze that the price of the shoes is now 20% less than the original price. This
means that 20% of the original price is the savings that Jane will get. Therefore, we
need to get “20%” of P4,295.00”.

Step 1: Write a correct proportion, then find the value of the missing term.
n out of 4295 = 20 out of 100
n:4295 = 20:100

Step 2: By the cross product rule:

100 x n = 4295 x 20
100n = 85 900
100n = 85 900
100 100
n = 859

Therefore, ₱ 859.00 will be deducted from the original price of the shoes and it
will also be the amount that Jane will save.

The given problem is an example of a problem on Percentage. 20% of

₱ 4,295.00 is P859.00.

20% is the Rate, (the expression with the % symbol)

₱ 859.00 is the Percentage (part of a whole; part of ₱ 4,295.00)
₱ 4,295.00 is the Base (whole or total)

6
Example 2

60% of 50 is 30 60% is the Rate,

50 is the Base,
30 is the Percentage
Example 3

17 is 85% of 20 85% is the Rate,

20 is the Base,
17 is the Percentage

Percentage at a constant rate is directly proportional with base.

➢ In symbols: P = R x B, where P is the percentage, R is the rate and B is
the base.

Directions: Answer the following activities below. Write your answers on a

separate sheet of paper.
