1. A 2.5-meter rod is suspended at its middle so that it balances.

236. Each copper rod has an area of 600 mm2; E = 120 GPa; and the allowable stress is
60 MPa. The steel rod has an area of 1200 mm2; E = 200 GPa; and the allowable stress is
130 MPa. Determine the largest mass M which can be supported.
5. An Aluminum bar having a cross-sectional are of 1.5 in2 carries the axial loads applied at
the position shown in Fig. P-209. Compute the total change in var if E = 10 x 106 psi.
Assume that the bar is suitably braced to prevent lateral buckling.

7. A radio station tower was built in two sections. From a point 87 feet from the base of the
tower, the angle of elevation of the top of the first section is 25º, and the angle of

8. Two airplanes, Skyhawk and Falcon, are flying in different directions over a flat terrain.
They are at different altitudes, and their angles of depression to a common point on the
ground are given. The air traffic controller needs to calculate the horizontal distance
between the planes and their straight-line separation.
a. Find the horizontal distance from Skyhawk to the point on the ground directly below
Falcon.
b. Find the horizontal distance from Falcon to the point on the ground directly below
Skyhawk.
c. Calculate the straight-line (diagonal) distance between the two airplanes, considering
their altitude difference and horizontal separation
d. What would be the new altitude of each airplane if they both ascended at a constant
rate for 2 hours, assuming they maintain their current horizontal distance and the same
angles of depression?

13. A cylindrical pressure vessel is fabricated from steel plating that has a thickness of
30mm. the diameter of the pressure vessel is 650mm and its length is 3m. determine the
maximum internal pressure that can be applied if the longitudinal stress is limited to 200
MPa, and the circumferential stress is limited to 100 MPa.
14. In the figure, six ¾-in.-diameter rivets are used
to fasten the plate in a fixed member. Determine
the required force to be applied so that the
torsional shearing stress in any rivet does not
exceed 28.774 ksi. and is not below 17.264 ksi.

19. The spacing of the frets on the neck of a classical guitar is determined from the equation
d = (21.9)(2)(20-x)/12 , where x = the fret number and d = the distance in centimeters of the
xth fret from the bridge. The distance of the nut from the bridge can be found by letting x
= 0 in the given exponential equation. Find the distance of the 10th fret from the nut.

20. A high strength steel band saw, 50 mm wide by 1mm thick, runs
over pulleys 800mm in diameter. What maximum flexural stress is
developed? What minimum diameter pulleys can be used without
exceeding a flexural stress if 500 MPa? Assume E= 300 GPa.
21. A thin-walled, cylindrical tube shown in figure below with wall thickness of 4 mm is subjected to
a torque of 8 KN.m. Assume the tube is made of aluminum with G = 27 GPa.

24. For a water treatment plant having a flow rate of 536m³/hr, what is the required plan area of a
Type I setting tank to remove 80% of the particles having a settling velocity of 0.15 cm/sec.
25. A tee section is made up of 250 mm x 50 mm flange and web as shown in the figure, which is
subjected to a shearing force of 80 000 N. Given that the neutral axis (NA) is 80 mm from the top
of the flange and the moment of inertia at the neutral axis (𝐼𝑁𝐴) is 10.57 x 106 𝑚𝑚4.

29. Hercules saw a steel rod sticking out horizontally from one of his glamorous columns in
Olympus. The rod, which has a cross-sectional area of 12 𝑖𝑛2, was then stretched towards the
adjacent column. The tensile load at 120°𝐹 is 1600 lb. a.) What will be the stress at 0°𝐹?
b.) At what temperature in °𝐶 will the stress be zero? Assume 𝛼 = 6.5 𝑥 10−6 in/ (in.℉) and
𝐸 = 29 𝑥 106 psi.

30. A mine costs P25M, and will last for 15 years. Its plant has a salvage value of 2M, at the end of
the time. The mine will yield an equal dividend at the end of each year. What is the annual
dividend, if it is sufficient to pay interest annually at the rate of 4% on the original investment and
to accumulate a replacement fund, invested at 2%?
