I am writing to apply for joining your doctoral programme at HEC Lausanne. I am particularly
interested in your programme as the Department of Economics is dynamic, growing and composed
by professors with varied and rich Curiculum Vitæ. Furthermore, the DEEP shows a growing interest
in the literature of conflicts with well published papers and a strong network of scholars specialized
in this matter which is my field of research. Currently, I am starting my master thesis in Economics
at the University of Lausanne and expect to graduate in July this year.
Since my Bachelor at the University of Lausanne I have focussed my work and study on Microeconomics
and Econometrics. I took every opportunity to do empirical research in Microeconomics and to
increase my knowledge in this field by following course and being a TA in both domains. Furthermore,
it is the third year that I have the chance to work as a Research Assistant with Pr.Rohner during the
semester and the holidays. Thus, I could discover how academic research is conducted and enjoy to
overcome the daily challenge that it represents. Economics is not only my study and work but one of
my passions and it makes me enjoy going to class, reading related books or working as a TA/RA. For
this reason, I am involved in the life of the department by being the Master in Economics Students’
representative for the second year, by joining a research committee for a new professor and by trying
to share this passion with the first year Bachelor in Economics students through my work as a TA for
three years. In the evaluation survey of my TA work that you will find attached, my intentions have
been confirmed in the student comments “[strong point] The passion of the teacher for the subject”
and by the average satisfaction which is over 90%. All these tasks made me work at a 50% rate
alongside my studies which did not prevent me to succeed and confirm that I am able to carry well
an important workload as a PhD will require.
Furthermore, before going to the university I worked and studied in IT. Thus, since I was fifteen
years old I am fascinated by programming and IT. Due to this unconventional background I am able
to learn quickly and efficiently new programming languages or software. Those skills are essential
for empircal works as knowing Stata, R and Matlab. It also allows me to go quickly further and
master Geographic Information System or Network Analysis software which are widely used in recent
research and likewise used by Pr.Rohner and Pr.Thoenig. In order to excel with those quickly evolving
technologies I have learned to be autodidact. Furthermore, since then I had the opportunity to
work in different domain and I was able to integrate successfully very different teams that worked in
different languages (English for Merk Serono or German for Securitas).
Aside being a passion, continuing with a PhD is in line with my background, my current personal life
and future work ambitions namely joining an NGO and working on conflict. Furthermore, taking into
account all these variables I have decided to apply only in the University of Lausanne as it presents
my best opportunity. Due to my unconventional background, my enthusiasm and the fact that I can
carry successfully important work load I am confident that I could contribute and extend the scope
of the literature produced at the DEEP.
Let me thank you in advance for your time and consideration of my resume and qualifications.
