Work Experience
Do you know what you want to do when you leave school? Perhaps you are creative and want to be a film producer
or maybe you are more practical and are thinking about becoming a mechanic. Many teenagers don’t have any idea
so their schools try to help by organizing visits from former pupils and trips to local universities or careers fairs
where they can talk to people from different industries. But by far, the most useful experience for many is work
experience.
During the summer term in many UK schools, pupils aged 15–16 get the chance to do work experience. They are
expected to choose and make the plans for where they want to work by themselves. This involves emailing or
calling employers (a good skill to learn in itself). During the two weeks students can work in one place or they can
choose to do two placements – one week in each.
Students usually work in places like shops and restaurants or maybe at their parents’ place of work. You may be
thinking, ‘But I want to be a flight attendant, so how will a week working in a local shop help me?’ But there are
many skills that you will be practicing there that you will also need at 10,000 metres. For example, you need be
confident speaking to customers and practical and organized to deal with everyday tasks. Not only this, students
have to arrive on time, work in a team and work for a longer day than their normal school day. This gives students a
real taste for working life.
For students who are already sure what they want to do in the future and are able to get a placement in their
preferred area, they get the opportunity to check if they are making the right choice. A student who may have been
dreaming about a career as a chef may realize after a week in a hotel kitchen that isn’t as impressive as they
thought. Finding out what they don’t want to do is just as useful and can help students to make different plans.
