Question
Can I load a program on a Logix Controller using the SD card with files sent over
email?
Can I load a program from memory card to new controller if the processor is
damaged?
Is it possible to load a project to a controller using the SD card without RSLogix 5000
software?

Environment
Logix 5000 Controllers

Answer
This feature can be used to transfer a program to a controller on another site or when
replacing a controller.
Yes, with some limitations. See the steps below for further information.
1. Make sure that both controllers have the same type and series.
2. Download the application to a controller and put it in Program Mode.
3. Insert an empty SD memory card into the controller.
4. In RSLogix 5000 or Studio 5000 software, click Edit-->Controller Properties--
>Nonvolatile Memory.

5. Click on Load/Store button and then select the On Power up option. This will load the
project from the SD card when the controller is powered up.

6. Click the Store button.

7. Read the warning message and click Yes to write files to the SD card.
8. Click OK.

9. After the process is complete, you can remove the SD card from the controller.
If the target controller is available on site:
10. Insert the SD card into the target controller.
11. Switch the controller to Remote Run or Program Mode.
12. Cycle power to the controller.
If the target controller is on another site:
10. Insert the SD card in a card reader and open its contents on a PC.
11. You should find a Logix folder on the SD card which contains everything required to
load the application in a controller on power-up.

12. Copy the Logix folder to the PC.

13. Zip the folder and email it to the responsible person on site.
14. On site, unzip the Logix folder.
15. Acquire a memory card. All controllers ship with an SD card; it is advised to retrieve
the SD card from the target controller.
Note: It is recommended that you use an SD card purchased from Rockwell
Automation. These SD cards are industrial certified and are better suited for a
manufacturing environment. Standard SD cards may operate correctly, however they
are not tested by Rockwell Automation to verify function and performance.
16. Insert the memory card into the computer. Backup any files on the memory card.
17. Delete all files from the SD card.
18. Copy the Logix folder onto the SD card.
19. Insert the memory card into the target controller.
20. Switch the controller to Remote Run or Program Mode.
21. Cycle power on the controller.

Note: During the boot sequence, the SD LED will illuminate, indicating the controller is
loading from the SD card. Controllers that have an LCD display will display LOAD. The
entire sequence may take more than a minute, depending on the size of the application.
