EE 2302 Midterm Fall 2015

As discussed in class, this is a take home test to be submitted INDIVIDUALLY in the dropbox of
D2L. You are allowed to collaborate with only other classmates in our current EE 2302 section.
You are allowed the following materials to prove your continued application of knowledge gained
in EE 2302 thus far and NOTHING else. Do NOT cheat under the graceful wrath of Crimm!
- writing utensils, ONE 8.5”x11” sheet of paper that MUST be turned in as a PDF with
this test via scan to D2L’s Dropbox at 11:59pm by Sunday 10/5/15 (Be sure to scan all
other papers including any other support files to justify your work and calculations )
Examples of supporting papers include any output from a calculator, computer, or cell
phone that utilizes the approved applications as tools such as TI-89 or TI-NSPIRE
emulator, PSPICE, Wolfram Alpha, etc.
- Do NOT communicate with any other humans except EE 2302 classmates!

Problem #1) The three phase American system shown below is a balanced Y-Y network with a 0 ohm
wire resistance, Rw. Each Zp is a 153 ohm resistance in series with a 47 µF capacitor. The rms voltage
of Van= 120 V where a positive phase sequence applies. Determine all the phase and line currents as
well as all the phase and line voltages.

Problem #2) Finish solving the Voc circuit equations done in class and then solving for
the short circuit current, Isc, to determine the thevenin equivalent circuit of the below.
Note that there are two independent sources at different frequencies and one dependent source.

Problem #3) Given that in the following circuit v1= 153 cos 30t, determine the power factor of the
second voltage source, v2, which is operating at the exact same frequency if the power supplied by the v1
source is 1 kVA with a 0.72 lagging power factor.

Problem #4)Given the circuit shown below, determine the power triangle of the
voltage source and its associated power factor.

Problem #5) Determine the average value of a cubic polynomial waveform which repeats
every two seconds given that the following points are on one period of the waveform:
(-2, -2), (-1.5,0), (-1,0), and (0,0). A sketch of this period of the waveform is below.

Problem #6) An amusement park has a monthly average power demand of 1.53 MW.
The average monthly reactive power draw is 777 kVARs. If the utility company
charges 15.3 cents per kVAR for each kVAR above the benchmark value (0.6 times
the peak average power demand), calculate the annual cost to the amusement park due
to power factor penalties. Also, determine the financial savings in the first and second
years if 153 kVAR compensation capacitors are installed for $153 each. Express your
findings with your answers in complete sentences in your own words.
