READING COMPREHENSION PRACTICE

Main Ideas, Themes

MAIN IDEA

The opinion or idea the writer is trying to explain, what the writer
wants to say to the reader.

PASSAGE1:
One New York publisher has estimated that 50,000 to 60,000 people in
the United States want an anthology that includes the complete
works of William Shakespeare. And what accounts for this renewed
interest in Shakespeare? As scholars point out, the psychological
insights he portrays in both male and female characters are amazing
even today.

This paragraph best supports the statement that

a. Shakespeare’s characters are more interesting than fictional

characters today.
b. people today are interested in Shakespeare’s work because of the
characters.
c. academic scholars are putting together an anthology of Shake-
speare’s work.
d. New Yorkers have a renewed interested in the work of Shake-
speare.
e. Shakespeare was a psychiatrist as well as a playwright.

CRITICAL EXAMNING:

b. The last sentence in the paragraph clearly supports

the idea that the renewed interest in Shakespeare is
due to the development of his characters. Choice a is
incorrect because the writer never makes this type of
comparison. Choice c is wrong, because even though
scholars are mentioned in the paragraph, there is no
in- dication that the scholars are compiling the
anthology. Choice d is wrong because there is no
support to show that most New Yorkers are
interested in this work. There is no support for
choice e.

PASSAGE2:
Mathematics allows us to expand our consciousness. Mathematics
tells us about economic trends, patterns of disease, and the growth of
populations. Math is good at exposing the truth, but it can also
perpetuate misunderstandings and untruths. Figures have the power to
mislead people.

This paragraph best supports the statement that

f. the study of mathematics is dangerous.

g. words are more truthful than figures.
h. the study of mathematics is more important than other
disciplines.
i. the power of numbers is that they cannot lie.
j. figures are sometimes used to deceive people.

CRITICAL EXAMNING:

e. This answer is clearly stated in the last sentence of

the paragraph. Choice a can be ruled out because
there is no support to show that studying math is
dangerous. Words are not mentioned in the
passage, which rules out choice b. There is no
support for choice c. Choice d is a contradiction to
the information in the passage.
PASSAGE3:
Reality TV shows will have an adverse effect on traditional dramas
and comedies. As reality TV increases in popularity, network
executives will begin canceling more traditional programs and
replacing them with the latest in reality TV.

This paragraph best supports the statement that

a) reality TV is low quality.

b) reality TV shows get the highest ratings.

c) more and more people love to watch and participate in reality TV.

d) as reality TV gets more popular, more traditional television

shows may be threatened.

e) Network executives make hasty and unwise decisions.

CRITICAL EXAMNING:

d. Choices a and c are not supported by the paragraph. Choices b and e only tell us
about particular parts of the paragraph and are too specific to be the main idea. Choice
d, however, is general enough to encompass all the sentences and the paragraph as a
whole. Every sentence supports the idea asserted in choice d.

PASSAGE4:
Black-and-white camera film, in the old days of film photography,
was very sensitive to blue light but not to red light. Blue skies would
often show very little detail, because the film couldn’t record all that it
was seeing. To compensate, photographers would put a red filter on
the lens, darkening the sky enough that the film could record its
fluffy clouds.

This paragraph best supports the statement that

a. red filters were very popular in the old days of photography.

b. infrared rays are invisible to the naked eye.
c. black-and-white photography used to be very popular.
d. red filters cut out some blue light on black and white film.
e. blue filters cut out red light.
CRITICALLY EXAMNINNG

d. The passage addresses the fact that a red filter could

remove some blue light in black and white
photography, so choice d is best. No mention is made
of infrared light or of the popularity of black-and-
white photography, and choice e is the exact opposite
of what the passage states.

Q.1. COMPREHENSION
Read the following passage and answer the
questions given below: ………. 15 Marks
UNSEEN PASSAGE
Drugs called anesthetic are among the miracles of
modern medicine. They make it possible for
operations and other medical treatments to be carried
out painlessly. A local anesthetic produces numbness
in one part of the body while the patient remains
awake. A general anesthetic makes the patient
unconscious. Before anesthetic were used, even the
most minor operation could be very painful. You
have only to look at early drawings of people having
teeth pulled to realize how lucky we are today.

Modern anesthetic fall into several groups according

to how and where they act to reduce pain. They can
be given to patients in various ways. General
anesthetics can be given either by intravenous
injection or as a gas to inhale. Usually the injection is
given in the arm or in the back of the hand. The gas
enters the body through a mask that covers the nose
and mouth. Sometimes, a patient given an injection of
anesthetic is given gas later to keep him or her
unconscious for longer.

The most common way of giving a local anesthetic is

by injection. Dentists often inject the patient’s mouth
with a local anesthetic. This deadens the nerves in the
area so that pain signals do not reach the brain. Teeth
can then be pulled or drilled without hurting the
patient. Some local anesthetics come in the form of
an ointment, which is rubbed on the affected area.
Another type is applied as spray. And, if an internal
area is to be treated, a jelly-like anesthetic is to be
swallowed. The great advantage of giving a local
anesthetic instead of general anesthetic is that the
patient remains conscious. He or she can then
cooperate with the doctor or surgeon to make the
operation easier.
