FAZAIA BILQUIS COLLEGE OF EDUCATION FOR WOMEN

PAF NUR KHAN, Rawalpindi

Subject: Parallel Distributed Computing Program: BS(CS)

Lab
Teacher: Ms. Sana Assignment 4
Semester: 7th A Deadline: 08- January- 2024

Topic: Cisco Packet Tracer

Lab Assignment: Implementing a Ring Topology

Objective:

The objective of this lab is to design a ring topology, configure devices, and test
connectivity to understand its functionality.

Scenario:

You are tasked with designing a network for a small office using a ring
topology. The network consists of:

 5 switches connected in a ring.

 6 PCs connected to the switches.

You need to configure the network to ensure full connectivity and test how it
performs under normal conditions.

Lab Tasks

Task 1: Network Design

1. Open Cisco Packet Tracer and create the given ring topology:
o Connect Switch0, Switch1, Switch2, Switch3, and Switch4 in a
ring.

o Connect PC0 to Switch0, PC1 to Switch1, and so on, until PC5 is

connected to Switch4.

2. Ensure all connections are established using straight-through cables for

end devices and cross-over cables for switch-to-switch links.

Task 2: IP Configuration

1. Assign IP addresses to all PCs as per the following table:

Subnet Mask IP Address Device

255.255.255.0 192.168.1.10 PC0

255.255.255.0 192.168.1.20 PC1

255.255.255.0 192.168.1.30 PC2

255.255.255.0 192.168.1.40 PC3

255.255.255.0 192.168.1.50 PC4

255.255.255.0 192.168.1.60 PC5

2. Verify IP configurations by testing connectivity between directly

connected PCs using the ping command.

Task 3: Testing Full Connectivity

1. Test connectivity between all PCs (e.g., from PC0 to PC5) using the ping
command.

2. Document the results and ensure all devices can communicate with each
other.

Documentation Requirements
1. Introduction

 What is a ring topology? A ring topology is a type of network

configuration where each device (or node) is connected to two other
devices, forming a circular data path. Data travels in one or both
directions around the ring.

 Objective: The goal of this lab is to design a ring topology, assign IP

addresses, and test connectivity under normal conditions.

2. Network Design

 Include a clear diagram of the designed topology with labels for all
devices.

 Explain step-by-step how the topology was created, including the use of
cables and devices.

3. IP Addressing Scheme

 Table of IP addresses and subnet masks.

 Importance: Each device must have a unique IP address to enable

communication without conflicts.

4. Ping Test Results

 Screenshots of successful ping tests between PCs.

 Analysis: Explain what the results indicate about connectivity and data
flow in the network.

5. Conclusion

 Summary of what was learned from the lab.

Submission Requirements:

1. Screenshots of your topology, IP configurations, and ping results.

2. Clear, step-by-step documentation for all tasks.

Note: Your documentation should be concise and focused. Include your
learning outcomes to reflect understanding.
