Q.

N
Calculate the Lateral Spring Stiffness using idealized data.

Solution:
Idealizing the soil properties and pile parameters.
Using Lpile v2018 to get the plot between deflection vs depth and soil reaction vs depth.
The procedure on Lpile is as follow:

Step 1: Program Options

Step 2: Defining Pile Properties

i.) Section Type
ii.) Shaft Dimension

iii.) Concrete Properties

iv.) Rebar

v.) Transverse Reinforcement

Step 3: Soil Properties

let us assume a hyphothetical Soil Profile Data

From Lpile,

with soil properties as,

Step 4: Pile Head Loading

Step 5: Ground Slope

Step 6: Pile and Soil Profile

Step 7: Run Analysis

Step 8: Open Presentation Graphing Utility
Step 9: Graphics Tab
Then Export Graphs to Excel , select lateral delflection vs depth and mobilized soil reaction vs
depth.

Depth Interval not to be taken more than pile diameter. As our pile dia is 800 mm so, neglecting data
less than 800mm depth at first, i.e 0.72 m is taken, similarly less than 1600mm is 1.44m, less than 2.4m
is 2.16m and so on. Deleting data in between these intervals.

These values can be put into FEM software like ETABS, SAP to clarify the soil properties and
process the further design in those softwares.
