Instructions on how to install Xilinx Vivado

Note: A complete set of tutorials and guides regarding the installation and
licensing of Vivado can be found at the following URL:
Vivado 2022.2 - Installation and Licensing (xilinx.com)

In Spring 2023, we standardized on Vivado 2022.2.

• To install it, go to: Downloads (xilinx.com)
• Download the Windows Self Extracting Web Installer:

• When you click on it, it will ask you to create a Xilinx student account. Do
this by using your school email and a password. You simply have to put in
your address, etc. Since you are going to download the free version of
Vivado, this step is just a formality, but necessary.
• When you login to Xilinx with the credentials you just created, it will give
you a Download button. Click that to download the Web Installer.

• Once the Web installer is downloaded, run this EXE file by double clicking
on it; it should be under the “Downloads” directory.
• This download will not take too long (a minute or so), since the Web
installer is only about 200 MB. However, when you double click on the web
installer, the actual Vivado install will start and it generally takes hours! It is
around 75GB.
• Windows will ask you: Do You Want to Make changes to this device?
Answer Yes.
• When Windows Defender asks, Click Allow Access.

• You should see Xilinx Unified Installer come up. Version will be indicated
there (2022.2). When the Unified Installer comes up, click Next.
• Select “Download and Install”. Enter your email, password for the Xilinx
account you just created. Click Next.
• Choose the “Vitis” option and click Next.
• In Devices, select only the 7 Series and unselect the remaining options. It’s
fine even if you select all the check boxes, and it’s going to increase the file
size and capability to deal with several boards. But in the lab, we are only
using the Basys 3 board.
• It will show the install progress. A looooooonnngggg time later, it will
download around 50GB or so it needs and will start installing. Keep clicking
the default options and you will have Vivado and Vitis icons on your
desktop.
• If the installation was successful, you will see the following programs on
your Control Panel → Programs.
Of course, the exact dates, versions may differ.

• Once installed, you will need to follow Xilinx guidelines to obtain your
license.
Note: If you downloaded Xilinx Vivado Design Suite as a full image instead of
web install, the downloaded file will be stored in the compressed format with
the extension .tar. This file is not compatible with winrar or winzip (Please
download 7-zip, a free unzipping tool that will extract the complete installation
package).
To Obtain Xilinx license:
• Open Vivado 2022.2 App
• From the Help menu, choose Manage License…(Vivado License
Manager)
• In the Get License tab, choose Obtain License. In Obtain License, choose
Get Free ISE WebPACK, ISE/Vivado IP or PetaLinux Licenses

• Click on Connect Now. Then Sign into the Xilinx Licensing Site with User
ID and Password that you created during the download process.
• On the Product Licensing page, choose Vivado Design Suite: HL
WebPACK 2015 and Earlier License

• Click on Generate Node-Locked License and finish generating your

license.
• Click Next and Next as you go. One copy of your license will be sent to your
email account or you can download it directly from Product Licensing
page – Manage Licenses tab.
• Save your license file (.lic) to any folder on your computer and run Vivado
License Manager.
• Click on Load License under Get License tab and choose Copy License
and upload the .lic file that you have downloaded.
• Now you should see the activated WebPACK license in Vivado License
Manager (boxed in red below)
(Neglect those red boxes. It is because of I installed a newer version of Vivado for
demonstration purpose.)
