Tutorial Sheet Module 1

BMAT101L-Calculus

1. Determine that constant a and b in order that function f (x) = x3 +ax2 +bx+c
a relative minima at x = 4 and a point of inflexion at x = 1.
2. A vertical line passing through the point (1,2) intersects the X axis at A(a, 0)
and Y axis at B(0, b). Find area of triangle of least area if a and b are positive.
3. Determine the absolute extrema of the f (x) = 8x3 + 81x2 − 42x − 8 on the
[−8, 2]
4. Give the intervals where the given functions are increasing and decreasing
2 −3x
(a) f (x) = xx+1
(b) f (x) = x2 e−3x
(c) f (x) = x3 − x
(d) f (x) = x log x
5. Without solving the equations, show that equations
(a) f (x) = 2x3 − 3x2 − 12x − 6 on [-1,0]
(b) f (x) = x4 + 2x3 − 2 on [0,1] have exactly one real root.
6. A bike drove 30 miles during a one hour trip. Show that bike speed was equal
to 30 mile / hour at least once during the trip.
7. Find the point at the curves f (x) where tangent is parallel to the chord joining
end points of curves.
(a) f (x) = x2 + 2x −1 on 0 1 .

(c) f (x) = x − 1 on 1 3 .
8. Find the area of the region enclosed by the parabola y = 2 − x2 and the line
y = −x.
9. Find√the area of the region in the first quadrant that is bounded above by
y = x and below by the x -axis and the line y = x − 2.
10. Find the area bounded on the left by x + y = 2, on the right by y = x2 in the
first quadrant.
