Activity Worksheet

Subject: Computer System Servicing

Quarter 3
Title: Disassembly and Assembly of Computer System Unit

Learning Objectives:

1. To understand the components of a computer system unit.

2. To properly disassemble and reassemble a computer system unit.

3. To identify safety precautions while handling computer hardware.

4. To troubleshoot common issues encountered during disassembly and assembly.

Materials Needed:

 Flat-head and Phillips screwdrivers

 Anti-static wrist strap

 Compressed air or a soft brush

 Storage containers for screws and small parts

 Flashlight

 Computer system unit (desktop tower)

Instructions:

Part 1: Disassembly of the Computer System Unit

1. Preparation:

o Power off the computer and disconnect all cables (power, monitor, keyboard, etc.).

o Move to a clean and static-free workspace.

o Put on your anti-static wrist strap to avoid damaging the internal components with static
electricity.

2. Opening the Case:

o Using the appropriate screwdriver, remove the screws from the side panel of the
computer case.

o Gently remove the side panel of the computer system unit.

3. Disconnecting Components:

o Power Supply: Unscrew and disconnect the power supply unit (PSU) cables from the
motherboard and components (CPU, hard drives, etc.).

o Hard Drive(s): Identify and disconnect the data and power cables from the hard drive.
Remove the screws holding the drive and take it out of the case.

o Optical Drives (if applicable): Disconnect the cables and unscrew the optical drive from
the case. Carefully remove it.

o RAM: Release the clips on both sides of the RAM slots and carefully pull out the memory
modules.

o Graphics Card: Unscrew and gently remove the graphics card, if present.

o Motherboard: Unscrew and carefully lift the motherboard out of the case, ensuring all
components (CPU, fan, etc.) are disconnected before removing it.

o Cooling Fan/Heatsink: Remove the screws or clips holding the CPU fan and heatsink.
Carefully detach them.

4. Clean-up:

o Use compressed air or a soft brush to clean out any dust from the internal components.
Be gentle and avoid blowing dust into other components.

o Organize the screws and small parts in separate containers to keep track of them.

Part 2: Assembly of the Computer System Unit

1. Reinstalling the Motherboard:

o Place the motherboard back into the case and align it with the mounting holes.

o Secure the motherboard with screws, making sure it’s properly aligned with the back I/O
ports and standoffs.

2. Reinstalling the Processor (CPU):

o If the processor was removed, carefully place it back into the CPU socket on the
motherboard. Make sure to align it correctly with the socket.

o Reattach the heatsink and fan onto the processor, ensuring a snug fit.

3. Reinstalling RAM:

o Insert the RAM modules into their respective slots, making sure they are fully seated and
the clips on both sides click into place.

4. Reinstalling the Power Supply:

o Place the power supply back into the case and screw it into place.

o Reconnect all the power cables to the motherboard, hard drives, and other components.

5. Reinstalling Storage Devices:

o Reinstall the hard drive(s) and optical drives into their respective bays and secure them
with screws.

o Reconnect the data and power cables to each drive.

6. Reinstalling the Graphics Card:

o Insert the graphics card back into the PCIe slot on the motherboard. Make sure it's
seated properly.

o Secure the card with screws.

7. Final Check:

o Double-check all cables to ensure they are properly connected.

o Ensure that there are no loose screws or components.

o Replace the side panel and screw it back into place.

8. Testing:

o Reconnect all the cables (power, monitor, keyboard, etc.).

o Power on the system to check if everything is working properly (check for power, display,
and peripherals).

Guided Questions:

1. What safety precautions should you observe when disassembling and assembling a computer
system unit?

2. What is the function of the power supply in the computer system unit?

3. How do you ensure that the RAM and CPU are properly installed during reassembly?

4. What tools are necessary for disassembling and assembling a computer system unit?

5. What is the importance of grounding yourself while working with computer hardware?

6. What would you do if your computer does not power on after reassembly?

Post-Activity Reflection:
 Describe your experience during the disassembly and assembly process. What challenges did
you face? How did you overcome them?

 Do you feel confident in handling computer hardware? Explain why or why not.

 How did you ensure the safety of the computer components during the process?
