Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning Refrigeration
COMPANY INTRODUCTION
Heinen & Hopman is a reliable partner in the global maritime sector, offering top quality products and service in the
field of climate control (HVAC & Refrigeration). The no-nonsense and entrepreneurial character of the founders who
established the company in 1965 is still one of the main cornerstones of Heinen & Hopman. We support our clients
using our knowledge and experience by realising the best possible climate control solutions; either fully customised or
with varying degrees of standardisation. Like our clients, we are continuously active on a global scale to ensure that we
can always be of service. We are also constantly searching for sustainable innovations as we aim for the best and very
latest solutions in collaboration with our clients. Heinen & Hopman is critically aware that a company’s greatest asset is
its employees – it is they who represent the added value of our business. Our goal is to continue to expand in the global
market for maritime climate control solutions in a future-proof way.
In short, you can rely on Heinen & Hopman to deploy the know-how and expertise required to solve any heating,
ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration issue onboard ships. We see complexity as a challenge, no matter where
your vessel may be.
OPERATING GLOBALLY
Global networking is crucial in every line of business and the shipping industry is certainly no exception. Being able to
offer the highest quality of service and products to our clients at all times and in all places is of enormous importance to
us. This is why Heinen & Hopman aims to keep expanding our network and know-how and ensure we are exactly where
our clients need us to be.

INTRODUCTION
Marine propulsion systems are highly developed. From
paddle wheels to steam turbines and from sails to LNG
engines. Electric or hybrid propulsion is an interesting
option for ships that always sail the same route.
Available options
To cool down the technical spaces onboard, Heinen &
Hopman offers battery room cooling systems. There
are two main different types of batteries; air-cooled
batteries and water-cooled batteries. Therefore we have
four systems to cool the battery room onboard:
• Individual (single) cooling system
• Battery cooling system for air-cooled batteries
• Battery cooling system for water-cooled batteries
• Thermal energy management system
Depending on the average water temperatures in which the vessel will sail, a free cooling principle can be considered.
Free cooling means that no compressor power is needed to generate the required energy to cool or heat. When
the vessel will sail in the North Sea, free cooling would be a good application. Pre-cooling or 100% cooling without
compressor power can be achieved from November to March, giving the components a reasonable size.
In this case, a chilled water unit provides the required cooling energy, which is transported by means of a pump to
the fan coil unit in the battery room. The plate heat exchanger (pre)cools the water in exchange with the seawater or
internal circuit and reduces energy consumption. With a low system volume, a buffer tank is needed to reduce the
switching on and off of the compressor. The chilled water unit and the heat exchanger must be connected to a cooling
water circuit to remove the heat, so that the chiller unit can also run as a heat pump. A combination of heating and
cooling the room is possible.

BATTERY COOLING SYSTEM FOR WATER-COOLED BATTERIES
For vessels with a battery room onboard that uses battery power for peak shaving or to support the main propulsion
system, an individual cooling system can be used. An often used system is a fan coil unit applicable for technical rooms.
Main components and system temperatures are the same as for the air-cooled batteries. Pre-cooling or 100% cooling
without compressor power can be achieved between November and March and the components will have a reasonable
size.
A chilled water unit provides the required cooling energy, which is transported by means of a pump to the batteries and
the fan coil unit in the battery room. The plate heat exchanger (pre)cools the water in exchange with the seawater or
internal circuit and reduces the energy consumption.

Heating mode is the exact opposite of cooling and uses the heat from the cooling consumers or draws energy from the
sea or other circuits. Heat pump technology is used to lift the temperature to a more useful level. The unit supplies the
necessary heating to the accommodation’s water heaters, air conditioning, heating machine space and domestic hot
water preheating, using the excess heat from additional refrigeration circuits and battery rooms as a heat source. If this
is not sufficient, additional heat is collected from seawater via a seawater box cooler.
The complete system works on the variable water flow consumer circuit and on the constant or variable water flow
generator circuit, depending on the mode. To combine these different operations, a hydraulic shunt is placed between
these circuits. The system can run in the operating modes such as cooling only, heating only and the most energy-
efficient free cooling mode.
