25 Is it true that any line that divides a rectangle into two equal parts is a line of
symmetry? Explain your answer!
ANSWER NO 25

25 Is it true that any line that divides a rectangle into two equal parts is a line of
symmetry? Explain your answer!

The statement is not correct.

A line of symmetry divides a shape into two equal and the same parts. A line can cut a
rectangle into halves, but it depends on where we cut:
A vertical line (up and down) through the middle of the rectangle makes two equal parts.
This is a line of symmetry.
A horizontal line (side to side) through the middle also makes two equal parts. This is
another line of symmetry.

But a line that cuts the rectangle diagonally (from corner to corner) doesn’t make equal parts.
So, not every line that cuts the rectangle into halves is a line of symmetry. Only lines through
the middle are lines of symmetry for a rectangle.
