 Think About It 
Give one advantage for inputting text using a keyboard over using the virtual keyboard on a
touch screen.
Will not getting tired easily / input text more accurately

John installs an electronic lock on the door of the consultation room. The doctor can use his
fingerprint or a smart card to open it.
(i) Suggest another biometric authentication method which can be used to open a door.
Face recognition, voice recognition, iris recognition, hand geometry / fingerprint / palm print scanner

(ii) Give two disadvantages of using smart card instead of biometric authentication methods to
open the door.
Need to bring along the smart card.

Doctors may lose the smart card.

Another non-holder may use the smart card to enter the room. / duplication

2013 HKDSE Paper1B

Janice writes an article in the school newsletter and inserts the following code for linking to the
school’s web site.

(i) Give one advantage of using this code over a bar code.
It can store more data. / It has higher error correction capability. / It can be scanned in different
orientation. / It supports multiple languages

(ii) What is the benefit of using this code in the school newsletter?
The user can open the web site immediately when they scan the QR code with their mobile phones.

(iii) Describe another kind of use of this code.

It can store a phone number or contact information / product information.

 Low printing quality (B&W)

Dot-matrix printers
 Low device cost  Expensive ink cost  High
 High printing quality printing cost
 Slow printing speed

Inkjet printers
 Cost of toner < Cost of ink   Slightly high device cost
Lower printing cost
 High printing speed
 High printing quality
Laser printers
 High printing speed  Low printing quality (B&W,
 Not require to refill ink / printout cannot last long)
toner  Low printing cost  Specialized paper is used
Thermal printers
 Very high printing quality  Extremely expensive on
 Capable to print large size device cost
printouts  Device very large in size

Plotters

When comparing the advantages and disadvantages among two devices, price comparison
should be placed in the lowest priority.

Peter finds that thermal printers are widely used in retail and fast food shops. He decides to buy
an A4 thermal printer to replace the inkjet printer. Give two drawbacks of using this thermal
printer at home.
The printout cannot last long (affected by the environment, e.g. heat). (Quality)

The number of colours provided is limited. (Quality of colouring)

Special paper (thermal paper / thermochromics paper) is needed.

Thermal paper is more expensive.
