(b) 1.0 Ω
(c) 1.5 Ω
(d) 2.0 Ω

heat is produced by the bulb in 10 minutes?

(a) 2.0 x 105 J

(b) 4.0 x 105 J
(c) 1.2 x 106 J
(d) 2.4 x 106 J

3 In order to reduce electricity consumption at home, what kind of appliance should one
purchase?

(a) one which draws low power

(b) one which produces less heat
(c) one which operates at a higher voltage
(d) one which draws a high amount of current

4 A piece of wire is measured to have a resistivity in the order of 1019 Ω m. What should its
material be classified into?

(a) Alloys
(b) Insulators
(c) Good conductors
(d) Poor conductors

5 Which one among a bar of an alloy of mass 2 kg and a 3 kg iron bar of the same dimension
has greater resistivity?
(a) Iron bar because it has a higher mass
(b) Alloy bar because it has a lower mass
(c) Iron bar because it has the same types of atoms
(d) Alloy bar because it has different types of atoms.

Que. 6 to 8 are assertion-reason type questions. Choose the most appropriate option.

(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A

(b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A
(c) A is true but R is false
(d) A is false but R is true

6 Assertion (A): The fuse is placed in series with the device.

Reason (R): Fuse consists of a piece of wire made of a metal or an alloy of an appropriate
melting point.
7 Assertion (A): The coil of a heater is cut into two equal halves and only one of them is used
in the heater. The heater will now require half the time to produce the same amount of heat.
Reason (R): The heat produced is directly proportional to the square of the current.
8 Assertion (A): In a chain of bulbs, 50 bulbs are joined in series. One bulb is removed now
and circuit is completed again. If the remaining 49 bulbs are again connected in series across
the same supply, then light gets decreased in the room.
Reason (R) : The net resistance of 49 bulbs will be less than 50 bulbs.

Answer the following questions:

1 Write the commercial unit of energy. Express it in terms of SI unit.
2 A refrigerator having a power rating of 350 W operates for 10 hours a day. Calculate the cost
of electrical energy to operate it for a month of 30 days. The rate of electrical energy is Rs.
3.40 per kWh. [Rs 357]

3 Study the following circuit and find out : (i) the Current in 12  resistor (ii) Difference
in the readings of A1 and A2, if any.

4 A bulb is rated 40 W; 220 V. Find the current drawn by it when it is connected to a 220 V
supply. Also, find its resistance. If the given bulb is replaced by a bulb of rating 25 W; 220 V,
will there be any change in the value of current and resistance? Justify your answer and
determine the change. [i) 0.18 A, 1210 Ω ; ii) 0.113 A, 1936 Ω iii) 0.066A, 726 Ω]
5 Define watt-hour. How many joules are equal to 1 watt-hour ?
6 Write two advantages and two disadvantages of series and parallel combination.

7 From the given circuit diagram, Calculate :

[0.71 ohm]
9 Draw a schematic diagram of a circuit having a bulb, a switch, and three resistors of 3  each
all connected in series with 6 V cell. Also, show an ammeter to measure the current and
voltmeter.
10 Two resistors of resistances 3 Ω and 6 Ω respectively are connected to a battery of 6 V so as
to have (a) minimum resistance, (b) minimum current. (i) How will you connect the
resistances in each case? (ii) Calculate the strength of the current in the circuit in both cases.
