Experiment 2: Taking Simple Measurement using Oscilloscope.
Experiment Setup:
Task :
Task 1. Use a Multimeter to measure the resistance of a resistor.
Task 2. Set up the equipment as shown in the above picture. Make sure that you set the oscilloscope
probe to 10x.
Refer to Lecture P.P., set the JDS 2800 Series signal generator to a sine wave at 15 kHz (do not worry
about the amplitude yet).
When you want to observe an unknown signal in a certain circuit without having its amplitude
and frequency parameters, you may use these steps to take a fast measurement of the frequency, period,
and peak-to-peak amplitude of the signal.
Follow the steps below.
2
1. Set the switch on the oscilloscope probe to 10X.
2. Push the CH1 MENU button (the button will light up) and set the Probe option attenuation to 10X.
( Press CH1 MENU button or F0 button to display MENU, then press F4 button to select 10X )
Task 3. Set the signal generator to 250 kHz then get a good display on the scope.
Draw a screen picture.
3
Task 4. Change Signal generator to Square wave. Draw picture and record: Pk-Pk, RMS, Freq. and
Period.
Pk-Pk voltage ……………………… RMS volt. …………………. , Freq ………………, Period …………………
4
10. Put Cursor E on the lowest point of the waveform. The amplitude of the waveform will be displayed
at Delta (dV).
In certain circumstances, to display a noisy signal on the oscilloscope and to get its clear details, you may
follow the steps below to analyze this signal.
3. Push the Mode button to select the Peak Detect option to display a noisy signal.
4. If necessary, push the DISPLAY button and set the Contrast option to view the noise more clearly.
5
4. Push the Averages button and adjust the number of running averages to watch the change in the
waveform display.
Note: Averaging reduces random noise and lets you view the signal details more easily.
**** Set the JDS 2800 signal generator to a Pulse wave at 15 kHz and duty cycle to 10%.
You may refer to the following example to easily capture some aperiodic signals like pulses and glitches.
1. First, set up the oscilloscope probe and the attenuation factor of CH1.
2. Turn the vertical VOLTS/DIV and horizontal SEC/DIV knobs to a proper position for a better
examination of the signal.
4. Push the Mode button to select the Peak Detect option button.
5. Push the TRIG MENU button and select Rising for the Slope option. Then adjust the trigger level
properly (use TRIGGER LEVEL Knob and set the trigger level to 0 volts).
6
Using this feature can help you to capture occasional events more easily. This is an advantage of the
digital storage oscilloscope.
Push the SINGLE SEQ button to start the acquisition. Notice the displayed signal is frozen.
