COMBINATION
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:

• illustrates the combination of objects

• differentiates permutation from combination

of n objects taken r at a time

• solves problems involving permutations

and combinations
WHAT IS COMBINATION?
Combination is a mathematical technique
that determines the number of possible
arrangements in a collection of items where
the order of the selection does not matter.
EXAMPLE
The BSANHS Math Club is entitled to send 2 contestants to a
local Math Contest. In how many ways could the choice be
made from among the best competitors, Anna, Ella, and Ross?

ANNA ELLA ROSS

EXAMPLE The BSANHS Math Club is entitled to send 2 contestants to a local Math
Contest. In how many ways could the choice be made from among the
best competitors, Anna, Ella, and Ross?

ANNA, ELLA ROSS, ELLA ANNA, ROSS

ELLA, ANNA ELLA, ROSS ROSS, ANNA

Therefore, the BSANHS Math Club could create 3 choices.

COMBINATION
the order doesn’t matter.

PERMUTATION
the order does matter.
State whether the given example is a
combination or a permutation.

COMBINATION
COMBINATION FORMULA
The number of combinations of n things taken r at a time is
written as 𝐶 𝑛, 𝑟 , 𝑛𝐶𝑟 or 𝐶𝑟𝑛 .
The formula is given by:
𝑛!
𝐶(𝑛, 𝑟) =
𝑛 − 𝑟 ! 𝑟!

𝐶(𝑛, 𝑟) = number of combinations

𝑛 = total number of objects in the set
𝑟 = number of choosing objects from the set
EXAMPLE
Evaluate 𝐶 7,2 .
Given: n = 7 Solution:
7!
r=2 𝐶(7,2) =
7−2 !2!
𝑛! 7!
Formula: 𝐶(𝑛, 𝑟) = 𝐶 7,2 =
𝑛−𝑟 !𝑟! 5!2!
7𝑥6𝑥5𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1
𝐶(7,2) =
(5𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1)(2𝑥1)
42
𝐶(7,2) =
2
𝐶(7,2) = 21

Therefore, 𝐶 7,2 is equal to 21.

EXAMPLE
In how many ways can a coach choose three swimmers from among five swimmers?
Given: n = 5 Solution:
5!
r=3 𝐶(5,3) =
5−3 !3!
𝑛! 5!
Formula: 𝐶(𝑛, 𝑟) = 𝐶 5,3 =
𝑛−𝑟 !𝑟! 2!3!
5𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1
𝐶(5,3) =
(2𝑥1)(3𝑥2𝑥1)
20
𝐶(5,3) =
2
𝐶(5,3) = 10

Therefore, the coach can choose three from five swimmers in 10 ways.
EXAMPLE
How many chess games can be made in a group of 6 players?
Given: n = 6 Solution:
6!
r=2 𝐶(6,2) =
6−2 !2!
𝑛! 6!
Formula: 𝐶(𝑛, 𝑟) = 𝐶 6,2 =
𝑛−𝑟 !𝑟! 4!2!
6𝑥5𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1
𝐶(6,2) =
(4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1)(2𝑥1)
30
𝐶(6,2) =
2
𝐶(6,2) = 15

Therefore, 15 chess games can be made in a group of 6 players.

EXAMPLE
A local school board with 8 people needs to form a committee with three
people. How many ways can this committee be formed?
Given: n = 8 Solution:
8!
r=3 𝐶(8,3) =
8−3 !3!
𝑛! 8!
Formula: 𝐶(𝑛, 𝑟) = 𝐶 8,3 =
𝑛−𝑟 !𝑟! 5!3!
8𝑥7𝑥6𝑥5𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1
𝐶(8,3) =
(5𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1)(3𝑥2𝑥1)
336
𝐶(8,3) =
6
𝐶(8,3) = 56
Therefore, there are 56 ways to form the committee with 3 people.
EXAMPLE
A local school board with 8 people needs to form a committee with three
different responsibilities. How many ways can this committee be formed?
Given: n = 8 Solution:
8!
r=3 𝑃(8,3) =
8−3 !
𝑛! 8!
Formula: 𝑃(𝑛, 𝑟) = 𝑃 8,3 =
𝑛−𝑟 ! 5!
8𝑥7𝑥6𝑥5𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1
𝑃(8,3) =
(5𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1)
𝑃(8,3) = 336

Therefore, there are 336 ways to form the committee with 3 people.
EXAMPLE
In a group of 10 people, a P1000, P500, P200 and P100 prize will be given. How
many ways can prizes be distributed?
Given: n = 10 Solution:
10!
r=4 𝑃(10,4) =
10−4 !
𝑛! 10!
Formula: 𝑃(𝑛, 𝑟) = 𝑃 10,4 =
𝑛−𝑟 ! 6!
10𝑥9𝑥8𝑥7𝑥6𝑥5𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1
𝑃(10,4) =
(6𝑥5𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1)
𝑃(10,4) = 5040

Therefore, the prizes can be distributed in 5040 ways.

EXAMPLE
In a group of 11 people, five P500 prize will be given. How many ways can prizes
be distributed?
Given: n = 11 Solution:
11!
r=5 𝐶(11,5) =
11−5 !5!
𝑛! 11!
Formula: 𝐶(𝑛, 𝑟) = 𝐶 11,5 =
𝑛−𝑟 !𝑟! 6!5!
11𝑥10𝑥9𝑥8𝑥7𝑥6𝑥5𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1
𝐶(11,5) =
(6𝑥5𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1)(5𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1)
55440
𝐶 11,5 =
120
𝐶 11,5 = 462
Therefore, the prizes can be distributed in 462 ways.
