Subject Name : Discrete Structure & Theory of Logics
Subject Code : BCS-303

CO-2 : Apply fundamental concepts of functions and Boolean algebra for solving the
problems of logical abilities.

UNIT -2

1. Discuss type of function and growth of function (2020, 2021)

2. Solve E (x, y, z, t) = ∑ (0,2,6,8,10,12,14,15) using K-map. (2021,2023)
3. Use Karnaugh map representation to find minimal sum of products expression
for the following Boolean function: F (A, B, C) = ∑ (0, 2, 3, 4, 7) (2023)
4. Define injective, surjective and bijective function.
5. Check whether the function f(x) =x2 -1 is injective or not for f: R->R
6. If f: R → R, g: R → R and h: R → R defined by f(x) = x2 , g(x) = 2x and h(x) = x+4.
Compute the following composition functions.
a. (fogoh)(x)
b. (gog)(x)
c. (goh)(x)
d. (hogof)(x)
7. Let f be a function from A to B. Determine whether each function f is one to one and
whether it is onto
i) A = R, B = {x | x is real and x≥0};
ii) A = R x R, B = R; f((a, b)) = a f(a) = |a|
iii) A = B = R x R; f((a, b)) = (a + b, a – b)
iv) A = R, B = {x | x is real and x≥0}; f(a) = a2
8. Let f be the function from R to R, find the inverse of f: i) f(x) = (7x+3) / (x-2), given
x is neither 2 nor 7 ii) f (x) = x2 then find f −1({1}), f −1({x | 0 <x< 1}), and f −1({x |
x > 4}).
9. What is meant by composition of two functions? Prove that the composition of two
bijective functions is also bijective.
10. Let A=B=Z, and C be the set of even integers. Let f: A→B and g: B→C be defined
by f(a) = a + 1 and g(b) = 2b, find gof.
