SUB: BIOLOGY

CLASS: XII
FULL MARKS: 35 TIME: 2Hrs
Instructions:

1) All questions are compulsory.

2) The question paper has three sections and 13 questions. All questions are compulsory.
3) Section-A has 6 questions of 2 marks each; Section-B has 6 questions of 3 marks each; and
Section-C has a case-based question of 5 marks.
4) There is no overall choice. However, internal choices have been provided in some
questions. A student has to attempt only one of the alternatives in such questions.
5) Wherever necessary, neat and properly labeled diagrams should be drawn.

SECTION A

1. Name the causative agent, mode of transmission and two symptoms of amoebiasis. [2]
2. a) Why are the fruit juices bought from market clearer as compared to those
made at home? [2]

b) Give the scientific name of the microbes used for fermenting malted cereals and
obtaining Streptokinase, respectively.
0R
a) Name the microbes from which cyclosporin A and statins are obtained, [2]
respectively.

b) What is the role of cyclosporine A?

3. Draw a neat diagram to represent the chemical structure of Morphine. [2]

4. Baculoviruses are excellent candidates for integrated pest management in an ecologically

sensitive area. Explain giving two reasons. [2]

5. a) Explain with the help of the graph the population growth curve when resources are
(i) limiting and (ii) not limiting. [2]

b) What is carrying capacity?

6. Name the interaction in each of the following: [2]
a) Cuscuta growing on a shoe flower tree.

b) Mycorrhizae living on the roots of higher plants.

c) Clown fish living among the tentacles of sea anemone.

d) Koel laying its eggs in crow’s nest.

SECTION B

7. Give a schematic representation of replication in retrovirus. [3]

OR
a) Name the respective forms in which the malarial parasite gains entry into:
i) human body and ii) body of female anopheles.
b) Name the hosts where the sexual and asexual reproduction of a malarial parasite occur
respectively.
c) Name the toxin responsible for the appearance of symptoms of malaria in humans. Why
do these symptoms occur periodically?

8. a) Name the scientific names of the two species of filarial worms causing filariasis. [3]
b) How do they affect the body of infected persons?
c) How do the diseases spread?

9. Show diagrammatically the steps in formation of Recombinant DNA by action of restriction

endonuclease enzyme- EcoRI. [3]

10. Give three hypothesis for explaining why tropics show greatest level of species richness.

11. Mention and describe three reasons as to why we should conserve biodiversity. [3]

12. What is meant by ADA deficiency? How is gene therapy or a solution to this problem? Why

is it not a permanent cure? [3]

SECTION C

13. The cloning vector is a very important tool in recombinant DNA technology. Just as

mosquito acts as an insect vector to transfer the malarial parasite into human body, they

are used to deliver an alien piece of DNA into the host organism. [5]

a) Give two examples of the most commonly used vectors along with their two very
specific abilities.
b) With the help of diagrammatic representation only, show the steps of recombinant
DNA technology.
OR
The recombinant DNA technological processes have made immense impact in the area
of healthcare by enabling mass production of safe and more effective therapeutic drugs.
One of such product is the genetically engineered insulin.
a) Explain in four steps, how human functional insulin was produced by using rDNA
technology.
b) With the help of a neat and labelled diagram only, show the maturation of pro-
insulin into insulin.
