1. GENERAL
Connect all signal cables according to the drawings:
Because there is limited space between the magnet covers and the magnet, cables must be routed with care. If
you do not install the cables “in a nice manner”, as indicated in this section, you will face problems installing the
magnet covers.
Always install cable ZX54 –MMX5 (System Filter Box – PFEI) first: it is more difficult to mount this rigid cable
when other cables are already installed.
Install the optic fibers after all other cables have been installed (see chapter "Installing the optic fibers").
CAUTION
Optic fibres are very fragile. Be careful when working with optic fibre.
NOTE
Cables that are not connected and cables that can vibrate against other cables can cause electrical
discharge (spikes) with image artefacts as a result. Route all cables properly in ducts and in the hooks,
present on the magnet.
The high power cable between power amplifier and system filter box is needed in case 15 kW RF (Intera 1.5 T)
power is used. Notice that the minimum bending radius of this rigid cable is 300 mm. The power cable has
connectors on both sides. For 1.0T and 1.5T systems you may want to shorten the power cable. For that
purpose a "service set heliax cable" is available that you can order with the 12 NC number 4522 131 5443.
A connector, tools and instructions are included in this set.
NOTE
It is not possible and not required to shorten the cable for 3.0T systems.
________________
Use the delivered L-piece at the output connector of the RF power amplifier.
If you have an S23/S24/S26 amplifier the RF output is at the back of the amplifier. Refer to Figure 2 or Figure
3.
3. GRADIENT CABLES
• The Intera Pulsar: 12 gradient cables must be installed in the examination room and in the technical room.
• The Intera Nova / Quasar : 24 gradient cables must be installed in both the technical room and
examination room.
• The Intera Nova dual: 24 gradient cables must be installed in the technical room between the gradient
amplifiers and the gradient switch and 24 gradient cables must be installed between the explore switch and
the system filter box. Inside the examination room 24 gradient cables must be installed, identically as for
the Intera Nova system.
NOTE
Because of the big amount of gradient cables and to allow a tight and proper installation
of the gradient cables, the cable length has to be adapted to the site.
The overall cable length between the gradient amplifier and the gradient coil should stay under 20 meters.
Cables in the examination room should be fastened, paired in packages of 4 cables on a separate ladder tray.
This will reduce cross-talk between these cables and minimize spiking. Spiking can result in image artefacts
See Figure 4. For details refer to the Planning Reference Data which can be found on the PMS Web site:

________________
CAUTION
Fasten all gradient cable connections by applying the torque as indicated in the SMI.
It is advised to mark a gradient cable connection with a permanent marker when done. Also mark the
completed gradient cable connection at the gradient chain cable plan in the drawings manual.
This way it is easy to verify which connections are finished.
Not properly fastened gradient cable connections can get over heated. See Figure 5 and Figure 21.
________________
After complete installation, the cables must be shortened to length at the system filter box side and new eye
cable tags must be attached.
Notice that the Intera Pulsar system has only the three left side strips. The Intera Nova /Quasar and Nova
dual has the three left side strips and the three right side strips.
CAUTION
Make sure that the connection spots at the ends of the gradient strips are free of fibre glass tape insulation.
The fibre glass tape must NOT get under the washers of the gradient connections. If the fibre glass tape
insulation needs to be trimmed off, use a small sharp scalpel. You must wear safety goggles in case the
scalpel blade breaks.

Start the installation of the gradient cables in the examination room at the rear side top of the magnet.
Bolt the gradient cables to the gradient strips (by applying a torque of 20 Nm to the bolt) and route the gradient
cables through the cable fixation brackets of the cable suspension bar.
It is advised to route each gradient cable in packs of 4, completely from the gradient strip connection directly to
the system filter box. This way the gradient cables are routed properly over the ladder tray. See Figure 4.
The connection to the system filter box can wait until all cables are installed.

Notice that the gradient cables are not installed at the time this picture was taken.
For Intera PULSAR, NOVA and NOVA DUAL systems the gradient cables in the examination room must be
shortened at the system filter box side. Eye cable tags must be attached to the cable ends on site. An AMP
cable clamp toolkit is available (see the tool list in section 1).
For the cable routing to the system filter box, see Figure 14.

CAUTION
Take special care not to damage the gradient filters inside the system filter box. They are made of ceramic
material and cannot withstand large forces; use two 19 mm spanners to tighten the cable connection and use
them in such a way that no force is applied to the filter
________________
At each gradient amplifier connection terminal, a pair of two cables must be mounted. Before the cables are to
be installed, install the brass spacing ring so the bottom eye cable tag will fit properly to the connection
terminal. See Figure 15.
Notice that the lock washer must be positioned with the lines towards the nut.

CAUTION
Use a torque wrench with a short extension and a 17 mm socket. Tighten the nuts to 20 Nm.
Never use an open-ended wrench or box-ended wrench. Never remove the terminal block partitions while
tightening the nuts. Only apply force perpendicular to the terminal block and make sure the terminal block is
not skewed from perpendicular in the bracket when being tightened.
Do not use spacing rings other than the supplied ones. For the quality of the connection it is important to
apply the required torque to the terminal nut and use the correct material.
The connection can get overheated if the required torque to the terminal nut is NOT applied and/or improper
material is used. See Figure 16.
________________
For Intera PULSAR and NOVA systems the gradient cables in the technical room must be shortened at the
system filter box side.
For Intera NOVA DUAL systems the gradient cables in the technical room must be shortened at the gradient
switch side. Cables with a length of 2.5 meter are used to connect the gradient switch to the system filter box.
These cables have eye cable tags at the system filter box side. At the Gradient switch side the cable ends
must be stripped off and connected directly to the terminal in the Gradient switch. Cables can be cut to
length if required.
Eye cable tags must be attached to the cable ends on site. An AMP cable clamp toolkit is available (see the
tool list in section 1).
sleeves
WARNING
Gradient filter sleeves are needed to prevent service engineers from touching the gradient connections when
they stick their hand inside the system filter box from the outside of the examination (RF) room.
________________
CAUTION
Remove the cable insulation over 33 mm of the gradient cables to and from the switch box and apply a
torque of 15 – 20 Nm to the connection terminals inside the switch box. See Figure 18.
Make sure that the insulation of the cable is NOT clamped in the terminal, since that will result in bad
connection which will overheat the connection. See Figure 19, Figure 20 and Figure 21.

Cables from the hybrid box must always be routed to the top of the magnet via the right-hand side. Immobilize
these cables with cable binders against the bridge support bracket. Refer to Figure 22.
The hybrid box / QBC cables must always remain bundled as shown in Figure 23.
Cable routing in this area is very critical. Be sure that no cable crossings are made.
If you cross cables, magnet covers will not fit.
On the cable fixation brackets, at the right and left-hand side of the magnet, labels are present.
Each cable has a specific location on these brackets. Install the cables according to these labels.
This will avoid cables crossing each other.

CABLE BINDERS
The water hoses for the gradient cooling are routed at either side of the magnet.
The blue (feeding) water hose is routed via the right-hand side of the magnet (see Figure 24 and Figure 25).
The yellow (return) water hose is routed via the left-hand side of the magnet (see Figure 27).
Cable routing in this area is very critical. Be sure that no cable crossings are made. If you cross cables,
magnet covers will not fit.

Normally the operator console is positioned against the wall. When the Operator Equipment Cabinet (OEC)
must be accessed from the rear, the OEC must be slid forwards. This is only possible if the external cabling
at the rear has enough slack. For this reason the external cabling is hung in a half loop on hooks mounted on
the OEC. Delivered with the console is a Mains Outlet Assy. This must be placed inside the Service Storage
Cabinet in a convenient position.
