1. GENERAL
Connect all signal cables according to the drawings:

Z5 – 2.1 Signal cable plan magnet

Z5 – 2.2 Patient support MT
Z5 – 2.4.1 Gradient parts (Pulsar gradients with Copley 271)
Z5 – 2.5.1 Gradient parts (Nova gradients with Copley 271)
Z5 – 2.5.2 Gradient parts (Nova dual gradients with Copley 271)
Z5 – 2.6 RF parts (Standard, Stellar, Nova , Nova dual and Quasar
gradients)
Z5 – 2.6.1 RF parts (Quasar gradients)
Z5 – 2.7 Console

Because there is limited space between the magnet covers and the magnet, cables must be routed with care. If
you do not install the cables “in a nice manner”, as indicated in this section, you will face problems installing the
magnet covers.

Always install cable ZX54 –MMX5 (System Filter Box – PFEI) first: it is more difficult to mount this rigid cable
when other cables are already installed.

Install the optic fibers after all other cables have been installed (see chapter "Installing the optic fibers").

CAUTION

Optic fibres are very fragile. Be careful when working with optic fibre.

NOTE

Cables that are not connected and cables that can vibrate against other cables can cause electrical
discharge (spikes) with image artefacts as a result. Route all cables properly in ducts and in the hooks,
present on the magnet.

2. INSTALLATION OF THE HIGH POWER RF CABLE

Intera 1.0T and Intera 1.5T systems with Stellar, Pulsar, Nova or Nova dual gradients use a thick high power
RF cable between the system filter box and the RF amplifier (Refer to Figure 1). 3.0T systems use a thin semi-
rigid coaxial cable with 7/16 DIN connections on the RF-amplifier and SFB.

Figure 1- High power RF cable (Nova gradient chain)

The high power cable between power amplifier and system filter box is needed in case 15 kW RF (Intera 1.5 T)
power is used. Notice that the minimum bending radius of this rigid cable is 300 mm. The power cable has
connectors on both sides. For 1.0T and 1.5T systems you may want to shorten the power cable. For that
purpose a "service set heliax cable" is available that you can order with the 12 NC number 4522 131 5443.
A connector, tools and instructions are included in this set.

NOTE

It is not possible and not required to shorten the cable for 3.0T systems.

________________

In the examination room a thin RF cable type RG217 is used.

Use the delivered L-piece at the output connector of the RF power amplifier.

3. GRADIENT CABLES
• The Intera Pulsar: 12 gradient cables must be installed in the examination room and in the technical room.

• The Intera Nova / Quasar : 24 gradient cables must be installed in both the technical room and
examination room.

• The Intera Nova dual: 24 gradient cables must be installed in the technical room between the gradient
amplifiers and the gradient switch and 24 gradient cables must be installed between the explore switch and
the system filter box. Inside the examination room 24 gradient cables must be installed, identically as for
the Intera Nova system.

NOTE

Because of the big amount of gradient cables and to allow a tight and proper installation
of the gradient cables, the cable length has to be adapted to the site.
The overall cable length between the gradient amplifier and the gradient coil should stay under 20 meters.
Cables in the examination room should be fastened, paired in packages of 4 cables on a separate ladder tray.
This will reduce cross-talk between these cables and minimize spiking. Spiking can result in image artefacts
See Figure 4. For details refer to the Planning Reference Data which can be found on the PMS Web site:
http://technet.best.ms.philips.com/prd/

CAUTION

Fasten all gradient cable connections by applying the torque as indicated in the SMI.
It is advised to mark a gradient cable connection with a permanent marker when done. Also mark the
completed gradient cable connection at the gradient chain cable plan in the drawings manual.
This way it is easy to verify which connections are finished.
Not properly fastened gradient cable connections can get over heated. See Figure 5 and Figure 21.

3.1. MOUNTING ADDITIONAL FILTERS IN THE SYSTEM FILTER BOX

For Intera Pulsar systems, six gradient filters are factory mounted inside the system filter box. For Intera Nova /
Quasar systems and Intera Nova dual systems six extra gradient filters must be mounted during installation. A
special spanner is supplied with the filters. To secure the nut a small Allen key is needed. Refer to drawing
Z3-2.2. in the drawing manual for installation of the filters.

3.2. GRADIENT CABLES IN THE EXAMINATION ROOM (EXTENDED STRIPS)

The gradient cables for the examination room have eye cable tags installed only at one end. The end with
installed cable tag must be connected to the gradient strips. See Figure 6.
See Figure 7 and Figure 8 for the connection positions.

After complete installation, the cables must be shortened to length at the system filter box side and new eye
cable tags must be attached.

Notice that the Intera Pulsar system has only the three left side strips. The Intera Nova /Quasar and Nova
dual has the three left side strips and the three right side strips.

Figure 6 – Connection of the cables to the strips

Install Nordlock rings at both ends and

apply a torque of 20 Nm to the bolt.

CAUTION

Make sure that the connection spots at the ends of the gradient strips are free of fibre glass tape insulation.
The fibre glass tape must NOT get under the washers of the gradient connections. If the fibre glass tape
insulation needs to be trimmed off, use a small sharp scalpel. You must wear safety goggles in case the
scalpel blade breaks.

8. CONNECTING CABLES TO THE OPERATOR CONSOLE

Normally the operator console is positioned against the wall. When the Operator Equipment Cabinet (OEC)
must be accessed from the rear, the OEC must be slid forwards. This is only possible if the external cabling
at the rear has enough slack. For this reason the external cabling is hung in a half loop on hooks mounted on
the OEC. Delivered with the console is a Mains Outlet Assy. This must be placed inside the Service Storage
Cabinet in a convenient position.

9. INSTALLING THE OPTIC FIBERS

Install the fibers when all the other cables have been installed. Route the fibers through the wave guide
(pipe) on top of the system filter box (Refer to Figure 33). Be careful not to bend the optic fiber cables too
much.

10. CONNECTING THE AIR PRESSURE SENSOR

The air pressure sensor is located underneath the RF load.

Connect the air hose to the measuring point (nipple) on the air duct.
Notice that you cannot connect the air hose to the measurement point at the rear ring frame. The pressure at
the rear ring frame measuring point is not enough to activate the sensor (refer to Figure 34).
