Question 1

Design the restrained slab B-C/4-5 (GS11) shown in Figure 1.

(a) Key in the permanent and variable actions with their respective factor of safety for
the slab GS11 in Prokon.

(b) Find the effective depth of the reinforcements in the slab for both x and y directions.

(c) Sketch the critical bending moment values for slab GS11 on your paper.

(d) List the required areas of reinforcements and proposed reinforcements for all critical
bending moments in Question 1(c) on your paper.

(e) Save the output for the slab design in pdf format and include all inputs, transformed
moments, reinforcements, and reinforcement excess. Name the file as Slab GS11.pdf.

Question 2

A continuous beam 6/A-D carries brick wall on all spans and loadings from slab GS10, GS12
and GS13. The characteristic permanent and variable actions for beam 6/A-D is given in
Table Q2.

a) Identify all characteristic permanent and variable actions for each span of beam 6/A-D,
including weight of brick wall. Take self-weight of beam as 2.9 kN/m. Sketch the loading
diagram for beam 6/A-D with permanent and variable actions on each span.

Table Q2: Characteristic Actions on beam 6/A-D

Characteristic Action for beam 6/A-D Magnitude of Action

Characteristic permanent action from slab GS10 4.6 kN/m
Characteristic permanent action from slab GS12 8.3 kN/m
Characteristic permanent action from slab GS13 5.1 kN/m
Characteristic variable action from slab GS10 1.2 kN/m
Characteristic variable action from slab GS12 2.1 kN/m
Characteristic variable action from slab GS13 1.4 kN/m

b) Take beam 6/A-D as L beam with beff of the flange as 600 mm for all spans, and design
both moment and shear reinforcements for the beam. Use moment reinforcement
diameter as 20 mm, and shear reinforcement diameter as 10 mm. Choose downward
redistribution, 0% redistribution, 25% live load permanent, creep coefficient = 2, free
shrinkage strain = 300x10-6 and value for cot(Ɵ) in Eurocode shear design = 2.5. Assume
this beam is a monolithic beam. Consider all supports for the beam to be pinned supports.

c) Generate shear forces and bending moments of the beam in Prokon. Hence, sketch the
bending moment and shear force diagrams with critical moments and shear forces values
of the beam 6/A-D.

d) Generate reinforcing and perform design of moment and shear reinforcements for the
beam 6/A-D. List the proposed moment reinforcement for every critical bending moment
in 2(c), and shear reinforcements for each span of the beam.

e) Save the outputs for the beam 6/A-D from Prokon which consist of input tables, input
sketches, moment, shear and deflection graphs, output file, reinforcement tables and
reinforcing diagrams in pdf format. Name the file as Beam GB7.pdf.

f) During renovation, an additional textured brick facade is installed along beam 6/A-D. The
installation of the textured brick facade results in an additional of 3 kN/m permanent
action on each span. Evaluate whether the proposed main and shear reinforcements for
beam 6/A-D in 2(d) are still adequate to cater for the new actions. If the reinforcements
are not adequate, propose new main and shear reinforcements for the beam. Save the
new input tables, input sketches, moment, shear & deflection graphs, output file,
reinforcing tables, reinforcing diagrams and reinforcing graphs for the beam 6/A-D from
Prokon in pdf format. Name the file as new Beam GB7.pdf.

Question 3

Column 4/B from first floor to ground floor is a braced column that carries characteristic
permanent action of 350 kN and variable action of 100 kN. The design moments about both
axes for Column 4/B from first floor to ground floor are shown in Figure 2. The column is fully
fixed at top and bottom of the column and braced about both x-x and y-y axes. Use building
inclination = 0.005 rad and effective creep ratio = 1.6.

a) Check whether longitudinal reinforcement of 4H16 is adequate to resist the axial load and
moments for Column 4/B from first floor to ground floor. If the suggested reinforcements are
not adequate, propose suitable longitudinal reinforcement.

b) Save your output from Prokon in pdf format and include input tables, tabular summary of
design results and column design charts. Name your output as Column 4B.pdf

c) Save the column detailing (bending schedule) in pdf format. Name your file as Column
Schedule 4B.pdf.
