Q) what is the RT technique in NDT and its application in the aerospace

industry?
Answer:

Radiographic Testing (RT):

Radiographic Testing (RT) is a non-destructive testing (NDT) method that
uses either x-rays or gamma rays to examine manufactured
components' internal structure, identifying any flaws or defects.
In Radiography Testing the test part is placed between the radiation
source and film (or detector). The test part's material density and
thickness differences will attenuate (i.e., reduce) the penetrating
radiation through interaction processes involving scattering and/or
absorption. The differences in absorption are then recorded on film(s)
or through electronic means. In industrial radiography, there are several
imaging methods available, and techniques to display the final image,
i.e. Film Radiography, Real-Time Radiography (RTR), Computed
Tomography (CT), Digital Radiography (DR), and Computed Radiography
(CR).

Radioactive sources:
There are two different radioactive sources available for industrial use;
X-ray and Gamma-ray. These radiation sources use higher energy levels,
i.e., shorter wavelengths, versions of electromagnetic waves. Because
of the radioactivity involved in radiography testing, it is of paramount
importance to ensure that the Local Rules are strictly adhered to during
operation.
Types of Radiography:

Conventional Radiography:
Conventional radiography uses a sensitive film that reacts to the
emitted radiation to capture an image of the part being tested. This
image can then be examined for evidence of damage or flaws. The
biggest limitation to this technique is that films can only be used once
and they take a long time to process and interpret.

Digital Radiography:
Unlike conventional radiography, digital radiography doesn’t require
film. Instead, it uses a digital detector to display radiographic images on
a computer screen almost instantaneously. It allows for a much shorter
exposure time so that the images can be interpreted more quickly.
Furthermore, digital images are of much higher quality when compared
to conventional radiographic images. With the ability to capture
highquality images, the technology can be utilized to identify flaws in
material and foreign objects in a system, examine weld repairs, and
inspect for corrosion under insulation.

Direct Radiography:
Direct Radiography (DR) is also a form of digital radiography and is very
similar to CR. The key difference lies in how the image is captured. In
DR, a flat panel detector is used to directly capture an image and display
that image on a computer screen.

Application in Aerospace:
In the aerospace industry, radiographic testing plays a crucial role in the
inspection of aircraft components, engines, and other aerospace
structures. Some of the key applications of radiographic testing in
aerospace include:
Aircraft Engine Components:
Radiographic testing is used to inspect critical engine components, such
as turbine blades, shafts, and impellers. Detecting defects in these
components is essential to prevent catastrophic failures during
operation.

Aircraft Welds and Joints:

Welded joints in aerospace structures, such as fuselage sections or
wing components, are subject to radiographic testing to ensure there
are no defects or cracks that could compromise the structural integrity
of the aircraft.

Composite Materials:
Aerospace components made from composite materials, like carbon
fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP), require careful inspection to detect
delamination, voids, or other defects that may affect their performance.

Landing Gear Inspection:

The landing gear of an aircraft undergoes radiographic testing to check
for any hidden cracks, corrosion, or structural issues that may
compromise its functionality during landing and takeoff.

Avionics and Electronic Components:

Radiographic testing can be used to inspect avionic components, circuit
boards, and electronic assemblies for internal defects or soldering
issues that might lead to malfunctions.

Aircraft Inspection and Maintenance:

Regular radiographic inspections are performed on aircraft structures
during maintenance checks to identify any hidden defects or issues that
may arise due to wear and tear during operation.
