Lesson : Quarter 3 Week 4 LAS 2

Activity Title : Normal Distribution
Learning Target : Converts a normal random variable to a standard normal variable and vice
versa.
Reference(s) : SLM Statistics and Probability 11, MELC M11/12SP-IIIc-4
LAS Writer : Cherry Ann N. Balandan

The z-scores.
Any normal distribution can be transformed to standard normal distribution and vice versa by
the formula
where x-score, µ - mean and Ơ – standard deviation

where x-score, X - mean and 𝑠 – standard deviation

𝑥 = 𝑍𝑠 + 𝑥 𝑥−𝑥 𝑥 = 𝑥 − 𝑍𝑠
𝑠=
𝑧
Each of the values obtained using the given formula is called z – scores.
Example 1: The scores of ABM students in the Final examination for General Mathematics has a
mean of 25 and a standard deviation of 4. Find the standard score of 45.
𝑥−µ 45−25 20
Solution: 𝑧 = = = =5
Ơ 4 4
Example 2: In a given normal distribution, the sample mean is 34 and the sample standard
deviation is 6. Find the corresponding standard score of 22.
𝑥−𝑋 22−34 −12
Solution: 𝑧 = = = = −2
𝑠 6 6
Example 3: Find the raw score of a standard score of z = 3.6 in a normally distributed population
with mean 54 and standard deviation 4.
Solution: 𝑥 = µ + 𝑧Ơ = 54 + (3.6)(5) = 54 + 18 = 72

Activity: Complete the table using the formula given.

1. 2.
x µ Ơ Z x X s Z
35 15 2 46 12 -17
26 -3 18 29 -4 25
24 6 36 33 26 7
56 31 -5 -37 5 41
48 40 -8 54 42 -2
