Portfolio Overview
This portfolio includes work that demonstrates that I have achieved all Unit Learning
Outcomes for SIT192- Discrete Mathematics to a Pass level. The tasks that I have submitted
and provided reflects my understanding of key concepts of the topics covered in this unit.
Through the distinction tasks, I have extended my understanding to apply the concepts in
real-world scenarios and not just met the learning outcomes.

From the beginning of this unit, I had a good grasp of mathematics so it made it easy for me
to understand discrete mathematics. As this unit went on, I improved my existing skills and
also learnt new things from this unit and built the understanding to master advanced topics
including recurrence relation.

Some significant milestones include:

• I was able to successfully apply logical reasoning to construct arguments

• Able to apply induction and recurrence relation to solve problems

I approached all these systematically and practiced a lot to improve. This ability of mine to
apply concepts reflects clearly in the tasks that I have submitted to achieve unit’s learning
objective at a high level

Justification:
I believe I should receive the Pass Grade because I have demonstrated all the unit’s learning
objective to a good level and applied them effectively.
The quality of my work consistently greatly reflects my great understanding of the unit and
my ability to use it effectively which aligns with the expectations of my grade.
The knowledge and the skills which were developed in this unit play a crucial role in my
academic and professional journey. Discrete Mathematics helped in improving the analytical
thinking, provided tools that can be applied in computer science, engineering, and many
other technical fields. I can confident about my skills that I have refined in this unit will help
me in my future studies and career aspirations

Reflections
The most important things I learnt:
I learned the fundamental concepts of Discrete Mathematics which is integral to problem
solving in computer science and engineering. The most important things I learnt were: how
to construct mathematical proofs using induction, using propositional and predicate logic to

develop logical arguments, learning counting principles like permutation and combination
which is critical for analytical and probability-based scenarios.

I feel I learnt these topics, concepts, and/or tools really well:

Graph theory: I can now properly analyze the graphs and solve problems related to path,
connectivity.
Set theory and functions: I am confident about their properties and how to apply them
properly
Logical reasoning and truth tables: I am confident that I can analyze and validate logical
arguments.
Counting principles: I have developed a strong understanding about permutation and
combination.

I found the following topics particularly challenging:

There were no specific topics that I found challenging. There were topics that took time to
do but there were none according to me that were challenging.

I found the following topics particularly interesting:

The topics that I found particularly interesting were the topics in number theory that
required arithmetic calculations like euclid’ algorithm, I found recurrence relation as a
whole quite interesting.

I still need to work on the following areas:

I still need to work on my calculation speed. I have to work on my ability to solve complex
problems in recurrence relation more effectively and connect with real-life applications.

The things that helped me most were:

The things that helped me most were first of all my teacher, because they gave proper
feedbacks to all my tasks and solved all my doubts in class and even provided proper doubt
sessions for the tasks, then the book that helped me a lot was Rosen’s discrete mathematics
which was provided to us on D2L, it was a well explained book with a lot of good practice
problems.

My progress in this unit was …:

The following graph indicates that I always stayed ahead of the Target line which indicates
my effective time management and consistent effort. I completed all tasks before the
deadline. This reflects my proactive approach to tasks and ensuring I met the unit learning
outcomes to a great standard.

If I did this unit again, I would do the following things differently:

Focus on solving more complex problems from the beginning only
Give more time to this unit to gain more confidence.
Participate in the discussions and get feedback earlier to build stronger foundation.

Other…:
This unit has helped me improve my analytical thinking and problem-solving skills. It has
also given me importance of consistent practice and seeking help when needed. These
lessons that I have learnt in this unit will influence my approach to professional growth,
particularly in software engineering.
