Lesson-1-Introduction-to-ICT
Learning Competency/Competencies
1. Compare and contrast the nuances of varied online platforms, sites, and
content to best achieve specific class objectives or address situational
challenges.
Learning Objective/Objectives
1. Differentiate IT from ICT.
2. Identify the different components of ICT.
3. Recognize the roles of ICT in different fields.
Form groups with five members each. Take turns answering the questions below.
1. How many times have you checked your phone this morning?
2. How many status updates have you posted on Facebook or Twitter today?
3. Did you use the Internet for an hour after you woke up this morning?
If you happen to be "guilty as charged" in most of these questions, chances are, you are a
digital native. And chances are, from the moment you were born, you were surrounded
by technology. You are surrounded by ICT.
As the popular saying goes, "Love makes the world go round." But before you start
looking for someone to fall in love with, you could argue how the Internet has made the
world go round for decades. Likewise in the motivation activity, the Internet has probably
made your world go round. In this lesson, we will understand how Information and
Communication Technologies have improved our lives in such a short period of time.
Introduction to ICT
ICT or Information and Communication Technology refers to technologies that
provide users access to information through telecommunications. It may also refer to the
use of these technologies such as the internet, wireless networks, communication
devices, computer hardware and software, and satellite systems, as well as the various
services and applications associated with them.
IT vs. ICT
ICT is commonly confused with IT. Information Technology (IT) deals with the
entire information domain, which involves the hardware, software, peripherals, and
various sub-specialties including networking, communications, and software engineering.

An item belongs to the IT umbrella when it is used for storing, protecting, retrieving, and
processing of electronic data.
On the other hand, the term Information and Communication Technology
(ICT) is mostly used academically referring to the branch of IT associated with digital
devices that are used to communicate or interact with digital information. ICT is used to
describe a particular area of IT, and is more specific than the general idea of networking.
The entire industry that uses computers, networking, software, and other
equipment to handle information is referred to as Information Technology while the
integration of IT with media broadcasting technologies, audio or video processing and
transmission, and telephony is known as IT. ICT is broadly used in the context of
education while IT is extensively used in the industry itself. Furthermore, IT can also be
considered as the integration of information technology with communication technology.

Components of ICT
1. Data – these are raw facts, figures, and statistics that are encoded so that it can be
processed by the system to provide information.
2. Hardware – these are the physical components of a computer required to input and
process data. Examples of hardware are as follows:
a. Communication devices – facilitate communication by using specific media.
b. Input devices – devices that can be used by the user to give instructions to the
computer. Keyboards, mouse, joysticks, microphones, and touch screens are
all input devices.
c. Processor – refers to a component of a computer that processes data,
specifically CPUs.
d. Storage – refers to all the hardware that are capable of holding information,
either temporarily or permanently such as hard disks.
3. Information – result of processing data. This is the output from the system.
4. People or users – these are the individuals that supply and enter the data through
various methods. They make the decisions that affect the output that will be supplied
by the system.
5. Procedures – actions and steps that must be taken to ensure that the system
executes the tasks that is expected to do.
6. Software – computer programs that provide the step-by-step instructions which must

4. Include some photos too so one will have an idea of how do they look like.
5. Summarize and organize all the gathered data and information on a slide
presentation.
6. 'Do this using MS PowerPoint. Add some graphics and animations.
7. On the second to the last slide, type all your sources and references.
8. Type your group's name and its members on the last slide. Then, save the file as
"ilabib-yourgroupsname.pptx".
9. Make sure that each member will have his copy of the group's output in his own folder
under "Documents"
