The Disciplined Mind

Your Practical Guide to IRON DISCIPLINE

Introduction

Make no mistake, if you want to achieve ANY KIND OF SUCCESS in this life, you need disipline. It
is not an option.

Discipline is needed not just to reach the top in your career, business, or maximize your net worth, it is
required for success in your
- relationships
- health / weight loss
- emotional development
- personal development

Fact: the main reason why the weight loss industry is a multibillion dollar annual industry is because
you can’t pack discipline into a capsule or a tablet – eating less and moving around more is so hard
because... you can easily do other things.

Anything worth doing in life requires DISCIPLINE -

you have to put up with people until they mature
you have to keep trying and trying until you break through
you have to wait and stay cool until your investment matures
so on and so forth

This book teaches you how to become more DISCIPLINED through practical techniques
- build discipline doing things you’re already doing
- build discipline through daily opportunities
- build greater self-control using a system

why discipline (benefits)

what is discipline

many levels to discipline

What you stand to lose if you’re not disciplined

There are 2 types of people: proactive and reactive

Proactive people focus on what they stand to gain

- small percentage of people

Most people are reactive

- they only make a move when they stand to lose something

What exactly do you stand to lose if you’re not disciplined?

Lose time
- you will take longer to master your career and key areas of your life
- anyone’s guess if you get to master these at all

Lose money
- opportunity costs are real
- when you waste time doing something easy and pleasant, you’re not doing things that have a much
better payoff (but are harder to master)

Lose quality of life

- there are so many things out there to explore / sadly, you let go of these through delays because of
your lack of discipline
- Your frustrations can lead to you not being fully content with how your life turned out
- You don’t want to spend the rest of your life regretting / feeling guilty / feeling you wasted your life /
feeling stuck

Lose personal focus and integrity

- Weak characters avoid confrontation
- Weak characters give in / compromise / settle
- You strengthen your personal integrity

Lose control over your emotions

- Lack of discipline means you REACT to things instead of responding based on your values and
character
- End up saying or doing things you’ll come to regret

Lose Tenacity and perseverance

- When you fold continuously, it becomes a habit
- Every little difficulty is enough to make you fold
- You get softer and softer with time

Discipline is something YOU DO

What is discipline:
- The ability to do things you’d rather avoid
- The ability to do what you committed to no matter how inconvenient or uncomfortable
- The ability to stick to a course of action even if you’re busy or you don’t feel like it
- Long lasting patience in relationships
- Sticking to principle

Types of discipline
* mental discipline
* emotional discipline
* physical discipline
* sexual discipline

Every day is an opportunity to become more disciplined

- Take every opportunity
- Every time you have to wait / stick to a decision / stick to a diet / stick to a schedule / go through
something unpleasant or uncomfortable... it is a GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY to build your discipline

Key mindsets to adopt to become more disciplined

Discipline is like a mental muscle

- stress it
- challenge it
- put pressure on it

The more I run away from difficult things, the weaker my discipline becomes
- lose your fear
- stop viewing these as hassles / ‘things I hate to do’
- the more you give in, the weaker you become – the harder the task or situation becomes

The more I do things, the better I get at them

- The more you do something, the less intimidated you become
- The more you do something, the more routine it becomes
- You will be able to connect the dots / you will be able to see patterns

Competence produces confidence

- You may not be all that confident about certain things right now
- But the more you master them, the more competent you become and you will get more confident
- the more confident you become, the more you try and the more competent you become, which leads
to more confidence, and on and on... you just need to START!

Momentum is on your side

- You will eventually reach a point where it becomes harder to stop than start
- All it takes is to keep trying and keep pushing
- Disciplined action becomes part of your routine
- Disciplined action becomes part of your identity

Build greater self-control using a system

Systems are more sustainable

Systems can be broken up and diagnosed in modules

Systems lead to more predictable results

Your system framework

- tracking (journal)
- process (multi-month plan)
- daily opportunities and challenges (daily tasks reorganized along discipline goals)

Scale up systematically

Scale up intensity
- workouts
- skipping certain foods
- increase reading difficulty
- spend more time with very difficult people

Scale up volume

Focus on reducing the time you take snapping back

Get used to snapping back until it becomes second nature

Get so used to snapping back you lose any negative emotional associations with it
